September 1, 2020/report

September 1, 2020

Summary:  The marine layer along the coast allowed temperatures from Merced County north to remain in the mid 90s yesterday.  The depth of the marine layer at Fort Ord is now roughly 2,000 feet.  However, there is no strong push of sea breeze into the valley at this hour.  Winds at Travis Air Force Base in the Delta are sustained at just 14 MPH.  further south, through Pacheco Pass, winds are just 4 MPH, so readings, especially from Fresno County south, will be nearing the century mark each day through Thursday.

A strong high is located off the coast of the Pacific Northwest.  It’s projected to slide down over California Thursday and Friday.  The high will shift a bit further east over Nevada by Saturday as a big ridge builds up into the Pacific Northwest.  This pattern will be custom made for a late summer heat wave, even though today is the first day of meteorological fall.  The Labor Day weekend will be a sizzler as some models indicate readings will push the 110 degree mark, pushing temperatures into record territory.  The high will also block any moisture from the monsoon from moving into California.

A very amplified pattern will begin Sunday as a large high covers the western U.S. for much of next week.  Locations east of the Rockies will be enjoying well below average temperatures as Canadian air sweeps southward.  In other words, the unrelentless summer of 2020 is like the pandemic:  it just doesn’t seem to want to quit.

Forecast:  Clear skies through Thursday night.  Clear and hot Friday through Tuesday.

Two Week Outlook:  September 8 through September 14:  This model indicates an amplified pattern with a big high over the western U.S. and a cool trough of low pressure east of the Rockies.  This regime will keep temperatures above average with dry conditions.

September:  This model is indicating basically the western half of the United States will have above average temperatures, continuing the trend of the summer season into the early fall.  This model shows near average precipitation, which is minimal at best anyway.

September, October, November:  This model always indicates above average temperatures for the western U.S. and this time around is no exception.  As we head into the autumn season this model is indicating there will be equal chances of above or below precipitation.

Winds Discussion:  Winds through Friday will be mainly out of the northwest at 5 to 12 MPH afternoons and evenings and 3 to 6 MPH nights and early mornings with periods of near calm conditions.

Rain Discussion: Expect dry conditions for the next 7 to 10 days.
