Forecast

September 5, 2020/report

September 5, 2020

Summary:  It’s possible we could see the hottest day of the year during the first week of September.  More specifically, Sunday and possibly Monday.  All systems are go for a blistering heat wave today through Monday. The marine layer, which was hovering around 2,000 feet, has now peeled back to 800 feet.  Above the valley floor, some rather dramatic warming is taking place.  Grapevine Peak at 4,000 feet was reporting a temperature of 79 degrees as of 6:00am.  Bear Peak at 8,200 feet in Tulare County was reporting 69 degrees at that hour.

Very strong upper level high pressure is centered over southern Utah and is drifting slowly towards the west.  On Sunday, the high will be centered over Nevada then over California Monday.  Models are still suggesting hottest locations will hit 110 Sunday and possibly Monday.  A vigorous low will drop southward from western Canada into the interior western U.S.  This will push the high off shore for significant cooling beginning Tuesday.  The winds aloft will be out of the northeast, resulting in lower humidity values. Even so, from Wednesday and beyond, a weaker low will blanket the eastern Pacific and California, maintaining above average temperatures through next weekend.

Forecast:  Mostly clear and extremely hot through Monday. Mostly clear and somewhat cooler Tuesday through Saturday.

Two Week Outlook:  September 11 through September 17:  This model indicates an amplified pattern with a big high over the western U.S. and a cool trough of low pressure east of the Rockies.  This regime will keep temperatures above average with dry conditions.
