National Sons Day

Summary: Strong upper level high pressure is now centered over Oregon and is ridging further north into western Canada.  The high now essentially covers the western one-third of the U.S.  the air aloft is very summer-like.  The temperature at Sandburg at 6:00am was 73 degrees with winds out of the east at 28 MPH, gusting to 36.  That easterly wind is indicative of a short-term off shore flow which is underway.  Above Oakland this morning, you have to go all the way up to 17,400 feet to find the freezing level.

With an easterly flow above the valley floor, smoke from the fires will be pushed westward over the valley.  This might impact daytime temperatures.  Model information shows temperature in the upper 90s the next few days, however if the smoke is dense enough, some locations could come in a tad lower.

The bottom line is this week will be just like summer.  The only difference will be shorter days and longer nights.

An amplified pattern will continue through Saturday.  there will be the big upper high over the west and a cool trough of low pressure east of the Rockies.  Most models show the high flattening out Sunday and Monday.  This will begin to bring temperatures down to some semblance of seasonal levels.  There is no chance of precipitation for the next week and more than likely the next ten days.

Forecast:  Mostly clear skies through Wednesday.  Mostly clear skies Wednesday night through Monday.

Two Week Outlook:  October 5 through October 11:  This model is indicating a strong ridge of upper level high pressure will be over the western one-third of the U.S. for very dry conditions.  Temperatures will remain above to possibly well above average.

October:  This model essentially depicts the entire lower 48 with above average temperatures over the next 30 days.  The most pronounced temperature anomalies will be over the Desert Southwest.  This model also suggests there will be an equal chance of above or below average precipitation.

October, November, December:   This model reflects the influence of La Nina.  It paints above average temperatures over much of the country, especially the Desert southwest, and to a lesser extent, central California.  Drier than average conditions are anticipated over southern California while northern California could possibly luck out with near average rainfall.  Above average precipitation is expected over the Pacific Northwest.

Winds Discussion:  Winds will be generally at or less than 10 MPH late mornings through the afternoons through Thursday.  Winds during the night and morning hours will be generally at or less than 5 MPH with periods of near calm conditions.
