Forecast

November 18, 2020/pm update

November 18, 2020

Summary: Isolated scattered light showers continue north of Kern County this afternoon.  Scattered showers continue over the Sierra Nevada, but even that will wane over the next several hours.  The cold front and its associated trough of low pressure have finally cleared the Sierra and are moving into Nevada.  Behind this system is a westerly flow which will result in upslope clouds developing along the west facing slopes of the Sierra Nevada and, to a lesser extent, the north facing slopes of the Tehachapi Mountains.  Currently, a 110 knot jet stream is flanked across central California and is moving relatively mild air in, resulting in seasonal temperatures through Friday.  Incidentally, Bakersfield is 16 degrees cooler than 24 hours ago while most locations further north are 9 to 15 degrees over yesterday at this time.

Embedded within this flow are weak disturbances which won’t have enough energy to produce any active weather.

Over the weekend, the flow aloft will turn north/northwesterly as a flow between upper level high pressure well off shore and low pressure over the interior west lowers temperatures even more.  We could even see local frost in coldest locations Sunday and Monday mornings.

Some models now show a strong upper high building over California during the middle of next week with a big ridge eventually building up into the Pacific Northwest and British Columbia.  Not only will this damper any hope of precipitation, but a warmer trend would begin Wednesday and more than likely would last through the weekend.

Forecast:  Partly to mostly cloudy tonight through Thursday morning.  mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy Thursday afternoon through Sunday.  Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy Monday through Wednesday with patchy night and morning fog each morning from Friday through Wednesday of next week.

Winds: Winds during the night through midmorning hours will be generally at or less than 5 MPH with extended periods of near calm conditions through Saturday.  Winds during the late morning through afternoon hours will be variable to 10 MPH.

Rain:  Rainfall totals are as follows as of 1;00pm:  Belridge .04, Corcoran Irrigation .05, Stratford .07, Lemoore .08, Hanford .04, Tulare .02, Exeter .02, Visalia .02,  Parlier .07, Fresno .17, and Madera .10.

Most locations from Yosemite north in the mountains were blessed with between .50 and one  inch with much lesser amounts south of that line.  A few widely scattered showers are still meandering around the valley north of Kern County as well as over the Sierra Nevada.  Most, if not all, the activity should be over by sunset.

Expect dry weather tonight and for at least the next 7 to possibly 10 days.

Frost:  All locations will be above 32 degrees Thursday and Friday mornings.  A northwesterly flow over the weekend and into early next week will issue in a marginally cooler air mass.  The very coldest locations Saturday through Monday mornings will dip into the lower 30s with a slight chance of an isolated dip out there in the upper 20s.  most locations will range between 33 and 38.  Models this afternoon indicate a strong high will build in from the west at mid week for a significant warming trend with above freezing conditions for the remainder of the week.
