November 27, 2020/pm udpate

November 27, 2020

Summary: Temperatures this afternoon are running 3 to 6 degrees higher than 24 hours ago at most locations with widespread low 60s as of 1:30pm.  Dew points are actually down anywhere from 1 to 3 degrees.  The air mass above the valley floor continues to warm, but it is very dry at all levels of the atmosphere.

Upper level high pressure is building into California, ending the northeast flow.  By the second half of the weekend, the flow will be weakly out of the west.  That, however, will not change the dry conditions on the valley floor, so subfreezing overnight temperatures can be expected for the next 4 to 5 days.

The next system will move through the Pacific Northwest Monday but will dive eastward into the northern Rockies, not affecting central California.  Behind this system is a massive high which will build along the Pacific coast as far north as the Yukon Territory of Canada, blocking any hope of precipitation.  Some models do show some kind of weak upper low developing over California about Thursday or Friday of next week, however if this occurs the only impact will be some increase in cloud cover and possibly some welcome higher dew points.

Forecast:  Clear skies through Monday night.  Expect cold nights to continue.  Mostly clear Tuesday through Friday.

Winds: Winds through Monday will be variable and generally at or less than 10 MPH late mornings and afternoons and at or less than 6 MPH with periods of near calm conditions nights and early mornings.

Rain:  Expect dry weather tonight and for at least the next 7 to possibly 10 days.

Frost:  Air temperatures are warming up nicely this afternoon.  As of 1:30, readings north of Kern County had climbed into the low 60s and the mid 60s in Kern County.  Dew points, however, are down by about 1 to 3 degrees at most locations, generally ranging in the low to mid 30s.  The exception is Kern County where some locations have dew points in the mid to upper 20s.

Now that the dry air mass is in place and there’s not a cloud to be found, with little to no wind, the stage is set for another night of subfreezing temperatures.  I see no reason to really deviate from this  morning’s report, so expect those traditional cold spots to chill down to 24 to 26 degrees with most flat land locations ranging from 27 to 30 and hillsides just slightly above freezing.

The inversion tonight will be fairly decent with temperatures at 34 feet ranging from 4 to 7 degrees warmer at most locations.  Coldest unprotected locations tonight will reach 32 degrees around 10:00pm and 28 degrees after 2:00am.

Now that the air mass is locked in place, expect similar readings for Sunday and Monday mornings even though daytime highs will rise into the mid 60s in warmer locales.

The weather pattern after the middle of next week is still unclear.  Models are showing some  kind of upper low trying to form over or near California.  They all do agree on one thing and that is that this system will be moisture starved.  Hopefully, though, it will at least bring dew  points up to an acceptable level.
