February 5, 2021
Summary: Temperatures on the valley floor are running anywhere from 5 to 10 degrees higher than 24 hours ago. Abundant sunshine has most readings in the upper 50s and lower 60s as of 1:00pm. The warming is even more dramatic over the foothills and mountains where most locations are 10+ degrees warmer than yesterday at this time.
The center of a strong ridge of high pressure is located roughly 400 miles off the Oregon coast with a ridge extending into Alaska. The first wave of arctic air is now plunging southward into the midwestern US. In the meantime, we will remain under the protection of that off shore high, continuing a northwest flow aloft until Sunday.
From Sunday night through Thursday of next week, a mild westerly flow will begin. There will be weak disturbances moving into the Pacific Northwest and northern California. This will spread variable amounts of mid and high level clouds over central California from time to time.
For the second model run in a row, the GFS model shows a chance for light showers Wednesday into Thursday, however all other models show dry conditions. In other words, for the next week, the pattern for central California will be rather mundane with pleasant afternoons with afternoon highs generally in the mid to upper 60s.
Forecast: Other than patchy late night and morning fog, skies will be mostly clear through Sunday. Partly cloudy Sunday night. variable cloudiness at times Monday through Friday with patches of clear skies and periods of night and morning valley fog and low clouds.

(uh-oh. John’s afraid of needles!)
Frost: The valley has warmed up a great deal this afternoon. Temperatures are generally 5 to 10 degrees warmer than yesterday at this time. The combination of warming air aloft and air finally warming on the valley floor will begin to slowly drag overnight low temperatures up. Even so, the coldest frog ponds out there tonight will dip down to 30 to 31 degrees with most locations now between 33 and 37. This is the last report where we’ll have to mention frost for a while as the valley floor will have moderated to experience above freezing temperatures beginning Sunday. A rather mild west to east flow will begin Sunday night, lasting at least through Wednesday. weak disturbances will move to our north from time to time, spreading variable amounts of mid and high level clouds overhead, helping to maintain above average temperatures.
