Forecast

February 10, 2021/report

February 10, 2021

A weak wedge of upper level high pressure is filling in behind yesterday’s weak trough passage.  There is still quite a bit of cloudiness over the Sierra Nevada and along portions of the east side of the San Joaquin Valley, however, mostly clear skies will prevail today and tonight.  the weak ridge of high pressure will shift southeastward Thursday, allowing a rather compact low pressure system to quickly move through northern and central California Thursday night and Friday morning.  precipitation amounts along the west side will be rather scant due to a rain shadow.

The pattern we’re under now is rather progressive.  That does not mean it’s a liberal pattern, just that highs and lows are quickly on the move.

The next low is colder and will move quickly out of the Gulf of Alaska and into central California during the second half of the weekend.  Showers may reach as far south as Fresno county by early Saturday evening with periods of showers Saturday night through Sunday morning.  colder air aloft will lower the snow levels down to 3,500 feet in the surrounding mountains.

Models are showing a  more persistent upper high building well off  the southern California coast Monday.  As the week progresses, it will nudge further north.  The next weather system is projected to spread light precipitation over northern California with a slight chance of showers from Fresno County north Monday night and Tuesday.  For now, the remainder of the week appears dry.

Forecast: Partly cloudy this morning.  mostly clear this afternoon through Thursday morning with patchy fog Thursday morning.  increasing cloudiness Thursday afternoon.  A chance of showers reaching as far south as  Fresno County by evening.  Showers likely Thursday night and Friday morning.  mostly to partly cloudy Friday night through Saturday morning.  increasing cloudiness Saturday afternoon.  Showers likely Saturday night through Sunday morning.  Mostly to partly cloudy Sunday afternoon through Tuesday.  Partly cloudy Tuesday night and Wednesday.

Two Week Outlook:  February 16 through February 22:  About 80% of the lower 48 is projected to have below average temperatures.  The valley is one of the few exceptions with near average temperatures.  The chance of rain during this time frame remains very low.

February: Both the 30 and 90 day outlooks reflect a La Nina pattern with below average precipitation over the southern 2/3 of California and above average precip over parts of the Pacific Northwest and northern California.  Temperatures should be close to seasonal averages.

February, March, April: Precipitation will continue to be above average over the Pacific Northwest and roughly the northern ¼ of California with the southern 2/ 3 of California having below average precipitation.  Temperatures should be marginally above average.

Winds Discussion:  Winds will be variable today at no more than 10 MPH.  winds tonight will be light to near calm.  Winds Thursday will be out of the southeast at around 5 to 12 MPH through Thursday night.  Winds Friday will be out of the northwest at 8 to 15 MPH and winds Friday night and Saturday will be light to near calm.

Rain Discussion:  We are still on track for two precipitation episodes later this week.  The first will arrive from late Thursday afternoon from late Fresno County north and over the remainder of the valley Thursday night and Friday morning.  this system is moving fast, so rainfall amounts will be fairly light, ranging from a tenth or two to possibly as much as .25 in Madera and eastern Fresno County.  Generally less than .10 is expected in western Fresno County and Kings County and no more than .05 over the valley portion of Kern County.

Dry weather will return Friday afternoon through Saturday.  showers will again become likely Saturday night and Sunday morning.  this will be the coldest in the series with snow down to roughly 3,500 feet in the surrounding mountains.  Dry weather will begin Sunday afternoon with dry weather possibly continuing through all of next week.

Models do show light precipitation moving into northern California Monday night and Tuesday with a slight chance of showers from Fresno County north.

Frost Discussion: All locations will be above 32 degrees in the short, medium, and long range.
