A ridge of upper level high pressure is directly above central California this afternoon, resulting in cloudless skies with temperatures in the mid to upper 60s as of 1:30pm. The backside of the high will still be overhead by Friday, pushing temperatures at many locations into the mid 70s, which is roughly 8 to 10 degrees above average. The high will give way Friday night as a trough of low pressure pushes through the Pacific Northwest and the northern half of California. It appears Fresno County, as is so often the case, may be the southern limit for a chance of light showers. Even in Fresno and Madera Counties, the chance of measurable rain is still low with the greatest possibility being late Friday night and Saturday morning. this system, however, will effectively remove the dominant blocking ridge pattern, at least for a while. The high will migrate southwest, well off the southern California coast, allowing a significant trough of low pressure to stretch from the Gulf of Alaska to southern California. There will be periodic waves of low pressure moving through the trough and into California. Latest model runs delay the onset of the first system until late Monday night or even Tuesday. The cold air associated with these storms combined with the higher sun angle could even produce isolated thunderstorms on any afternoon from Tuesday on. Whenever we mention spring thunderstorms, we also mention small hail. As you might expect, the mid 70s of tomorrow will likely be replaced by the upper 50s to lower 60s of the next week.
Forecast: Mostly clear skies through Friday evening. Increasing clouds Friday night. a chance of sprinkles or light showers from Fresno County north late Friday night and Saturday morning. partly cloudy Saturday afternoon through Sunday. Partly cloudy Sunday night and Monday morning. increasing cloudiness Monday afternoon leading to a chance of showers late Monday night and Tuesday. Periods chances of showers will continue Tuesday night through Thursday with a chance of isolated afternoon thunderstorms.
Short Term:

Woodlake 35/73/41/64 | Hanford 37/75/41/66 | Orosi 35/73/41/64 |
Winds Discussion: Winds will be generally at or less than 12 MPH through Friday evening with periods of near calm conditions. Later Friday night into Saturday morning, winds will be out of the southeast at 8 to 15 MPH with locally stronger gusts. Winds Saturday afternoon and evening will be mostly out of the northwest at 8 to 15 MPH with locally stronger gusts. Winds later Saturday night and Sunday will be generally light and variable.
Rain Discussion: There is a minimal chance of light showers as far south as Fresno County late Friday night and Saturday morning. even from Fresno County north, just trace amounts to possibly a few hundredths are possible. Dry weather will return Saturday afternoon through Monday. The earliest chance for precipitation from what appears to be a very active pattern will be late Monday night or Tuesday. Occasional waves of low pressure will move out of the Gulf of Alaska, through central California and will be interspersed with periods of dry weather. These systems will be oen the cold side. With the higher sun angle in the early spring season interactive with cold, unstable air aloft, thunderstorms could be triggered any afternoon from Tuesday on.
Frost Discussion: All locations will be above 32 tonight and each night for the foreseeable future.
