May 7, 2021/report

May 7, 2021

Temperatures are anywhere from 9 to 11 degrees cooler than 24 hours ago.  The cooling has taken place at all levels of the atmosphere as temperatures at 4,000 feet are 12 degrees lower and the freezing level has dropped down to 11,100 feet over Oakland.  That’s roughly 2,900 feet lower than 48 hours ago.  All this is due to a weak trough low pressure which stretches from British Columbia to central California.  The flow aloft is out of the northwest, pumping the milder air mass in.  a strong push of modified marine air moved down the valley overnight.  This will result in a very pleasant weekend.  There will be periods of locally gusty winds along the west side as marine air moves inland from time to time.  There is a pretty decent difference in pressure between San Francisco and Las Vegas. The current altimeter reading at San Francisco is 30.03 inches of mercury while at Las Vegas, the ol’ barometer on the wall should read 29.77.  all of the short term models indicate this trough should remain over the western US through Monday, maintaining pleasant temperatures into next week.  Tuesday will be turnaround day as the trough finally shifts eastward, allowing upper level high pressure to press in from the west.  Readings will jump back into the mid to upper 90s Wednesday, generally ranging at that level through next weekend.  Clear skies can overall be expected for the next week to possibly ten days.

Forecast: Mostly clear skies through Tuesday.  Mostly clear Tuesday night through Friday.

Two Week Outlook:  May 11 through May 17:  This model indicates upper level high pressure covering the eastern Pacific and the western ¼ of the US will result in somewhat above average temperatures and dry conditions.

May:  The old familiar 30 day outlook indicates above average temperatures for the western US including California.  Since we’re now entering the dry season, expect precipitation to be almost nonexistent.
