Low pressure is centered over Idaho and northern Utah this morning. upper level high pressure over the eastern Pacific is slowly building into California. The freezing level over Oakland earlier this morning was right at 14,000 feet, roughly 1,200 feet higher than yesterday at this time. The marine layer along the coast, after mixing out over the weekend, is becoming reestablished at a depth of roughly 1,500 feet at Monterey. Winds in the Delta this morning are light and variable so all the parameters in the world of weather are pointing towards a significant warming trend.
The off shore high will slowly build inland over the next 72 hours, driving temperatures into the mid to upper 90s Wednesday through Friday. Models are indicating a low will drop southward out of the Pacific Northwest and into northern California Saturday. this will again deepen the marine layer, allowing it to surge inland over the weekend for a nice cooling trend.
A temporary weak ridge of high pressure will build in Tuesday and Wednesday of next week. Over the past few days, models have been indicating a major trough of low pressure will be over and along the west coast beginning around Wednesday the 19th. For now, we’ll keep any chance of rain out of the forecast, but at the very least it would cause temperatures to fall well above average, bucking the trend of the past few weeks.
