Strong upper level high pressure is centered just off the California coast this morning. surface pressure remains essentially flat with both San Francisco and Las Vegas reporting identical altimeter readings of 29.94. Midsummer conditions will prevail through Thursday as the hottest locations on the valley floor will be nudging the century mark. Typically during the month of May, these temperature spikes don’t last very long with the latest cooling trend already being seen on the horizon.
A low will drop southward from the Pacific Northwest Friday night and Saturday. most models show it landing southward, forming a closed low over central California Saturday night and Sunday. This system may have enough moisture and convection to develop scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada. The combination of cooler air aloft and a surge of marine air inland will lower temperatures a good 10 to 15 degrees over the weekend along with increased wind conditions.
The low will move into southern Nevada by Monday. Next week will be considerably cooler than this week, especially after next Wednesday. a fairly strong trough of low pressure is projected to move into the western US. Some models show showers over northern California and the Sierra Nevada about the 21st. models also show this trough remaining in place through next weekend with below average temperatures prevailing.
