June 5 2021/report

June 5, 2021

Enough modified marine air seeped into the valley yesterday to keep temperatures in the mid to upper 90s from Madera County north while the remainder of the valley warmed into the lower 100s.  The parameters of the atmosphere are very similar to 24 hours ago.  The marine layer remains at nearly 1800 feet while a shallow intrusion of marine air continues to move through the Delta and Pacheco Pass.

The strong upper high has shifted into the intermountain west.  Even so, pressures aloft remain high, although marginally weaker.  As the weekend wears on, the high will continue to break down, allowing synoptic cooling to occur.  A stronger low will move into the Pacific Northwest Monday and northern California, allowing the marine layer to deepen rapidly and surge inland.  Temperatures Monday will drop to below the 90 degree mark.  As the trough digs further south Tuesday night and Wednesday, much cooler air aloft will arrive.  With the strong onshore flow pushing Pacific maritime air into the valley, readings will only warm into the low to mid 80s Wednesday through Friday of next week.

Models are still flip flopping on the pattern for next weekend and into the following week.  Yesterday, they were favoring a low off the coast of the Pacific  Northwest with an upper high over the Four Corners region.  Most models this morning show the high more over Texas while the low is over the Pacific Northwest, possibly resulting in cooler weather again about a week down the road.

Forecast: Other than high clouds at times, it will be mostly clear through Monday with a slow cooling trend.  Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy Monday through Thursday and much cooler.  Mostly clear Thursday night through Saturday.

Two Week Outlook:  June 12 through June 18:  This  model indicates a ridge of high pressure will be over the western states with a trough just off shore, resulting in near to marginally above average temperatures with dry conditions.  This model is also hinting at the beginning of the monsoon season with a southerly flow moving into the Desert Southwest.

June:  This model is indicating a ridge of upper level high pressure will be more dominant over the Desert Southwest and, to a lesser extent, California, resulting in above average temperatures for the month with the usual dry conditions prevailing.

June, July, August: This model mimics the pattern of recent years, indicating high pressure over the Desert Southwest being the most dominant feature, resulting  in above average temperatures.  Theoretically, this pattern blocks monsoonal moisture from moving northward.  Typically, there’s little to no precipitation anyway, and that will be the case this summer.

Winds Discussion:  Winds during the afternoons and evenings will be mainly out of the northwest at 8 to 15 MPH with locally stronger gusts.  Winds during the night and morning hours will be mainly out of the northwest at 5 to 10 MPH with periods of near calm conditions, through Tuesday.  For Sunday through Monday, there will be periods of winds out of the northwest at 10 to 20 MPH.  Gusts to 35 MPH are possible along the I-5 corridor.
