Forecast

June 9, 2021/report

June 9, 2021

A robust trough of low pressure is now making its move into California.  The freezing level this morning over Oakland has dropped to 9,100 feet.  If  you recall, last week the freezing level was well above 16,000 feet.  Add to that, the valley has been flooded with Pacific  maritime air.  Chilly overnight lows have been recorded as a result.  Maricopa was at 43 degrees as of 6:00am and Lindsay 44.  The trough will  move inland later today and tonight then into the interior west Thursday.

By Friday, weak upper level high pressure will become reestablished over California.  Models for the late part of the weekend through much of next week are quite interesting.  Initially, a very strong upper high will be near the Arizona/New Mexico border Sunday.  This will begin to drive temperatures through the roof over southern California.  The blended model information this morning has Thermal with a high of 117 by Wednesday of next week.

A low center will be off the coast of the Pacific Northwest with central California on the northern fringe of a southwestern high.  The result will be temperatures in the low 90s as early as Sunday with possible low 100s beginning Tuesday of next week.  A dry southwesterly flow aloft will be evident, so no chance of water falling from the sky for the foreseeable future.

Forecast: Mostly clear to possibly occasionally partly cloudy through tonight.  mostly clear Thursday through Sunday with a warming trend.  Mostly clear Sunday night through Wednesday.

Two Week Outlook:  June 15 through June 21:  this model shows a wide ranging high pressure system over the western US, resulting in above average temperatures and dry conditions.

June:  This model is indicating a ridge of upper level high pressure will be more dominant over the Desert Southwest and, to a lesser extent, California, resulting in above average temperatures for the month with the usual dry conditions prevailing.

June, July, August: This model mimics the pattern of recent years, indicating high pressure over the Desert Southwest being the most dominant feature, resulting  in above average temperatures.  Theoretically, this pattern blocks monsoonal moisture from moving northward.  Typically, there’s little to no precipitation anyway, and that will be the case this summer.

Winds Discussion:  Winds through tonight will be out of the northwest at 10 to 20 MPH at times with stronger gusts.  Gusts to 35 MPH are possible along the west side, mainly this afternoon through tonight.  Winds Thursday through Saturday during the afternoons and evenings will be out of the northwest at 8 to 15 MPH with light winds during the night and morning hours.
