Forecast

June 10, 2021/report

June 10, 2021

A relatively cold trough of low pressure moved through California late yesterday and last night.  it now extends from western Canada southward into Utah.  The air mass in the wake of the system is still quite cool by the standards of mid June.  The freezing level this morning over Oakland is all the way down to 7,800 feet.  All of the ag stations this morning are well down into the 40s with Lindsay reporting a chilly 42 degrees.

Today will be the last day of readings in the 70s.  Upper level high pressure is building over northern Mexico and will slowly move northward into the Four Corners region Sunday.  A rapid warming trend will begin Friday and continue through the weekend.  This will be the start of a searing heat wave over southern California and the Desert Southwest.  Temperatures through at least Tuesday will be tempered by a weak trough of low pressure extending from western Canada to off the northern California coast.  By Wednesday, the high will shift further west, driving temperatures well into triple digits.  If the high sets up the way some models indicate, a southeast flow aloft will develop over southern and central California, possibly moving a limited amount of monsoon moisture into central California for some high clouds at times.  Thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada may also develop beginning Thursday.

Medium range models maintain relatively strong high pressure over the western states through next weekend, resulting in a string of triple digit days.

Forecast: Generally clear skies through Monday with a warming trend beginning Friday.  Mostly clear Tuesday through Wednesday.  mostly clear and hot Wednesday night and Thursday.

Two Week Outlook:  June 15 through June 21:  this model shows a wide ranging high pressure system over the western US, resulting in above average temperatures and dry conditions.

June:  This model is indicating a ridge of upper level high pressure will be more dominant over the Desert Southwest and, to a lesser extent, California, resulting in above average temperatures for the month with the usual dry conditions prevailing.

June, July, August: This model mimics the pattern of recent years, indicating high pressure over the Desert Southwest being the most dominant feature, resulting  in above average temperatures.  Theoretically, this pattern blocks monsoonal moisture from moving northward.  Typically, there’s little to no precipitation anyway, and that will be the case this summer.

Winds Discussion:  Winds during the afternoons and evenings will be generally out of the northwest at around 8 to 15 MPH.  Winds during the night and morning hours will be generally at or less than 8 MPH with periods of near calm conditions through Sunday.
