Temperatures on the valley floor are anywhere from 7 to 12 degrees warmer than 24 hours ago. The flow of modified marine air into the valley has ceased both at Travis AFB in the Delta and at Pacheco Pass where light winds are being reported at this hour. The air aloft continues to warm as the freezing level has now topped 14,000 feet. Through Tuesday, central California will be sandwiched between a trough of low pressure off the coast of the Pacific Northwest and building upper level high pressure currently centered over southern New Mexico. This will keep readings generally in the mid 90s through Monday.
The high will migrate further north and will center over the Four Corners region. A major shift in the pattern will occur at midweek as the high continues to strengthen and expand westward over California. Temperatures will be near the century mark Wednesday and will become even hotter during the latter part of the work week and through next weekend.
Models have been amazingly consistent in indicating this high will be unusually strong and will drive temperatures into record territory. Blended model information depicts a high Friday in Porterville of 108 and 110 Saturday with the valley floor generally between 107 and 112. The flow aloft late next week will become south to southeast which may bring in a limited amount of subtropical moisture. However, the high may be strong enough to put a lid on the formation of any thunderstorm activity over the high Sierra.
The next chance for at least a minor cooling trend will begin about a week from Monday as a weak trough of low pressure moves through the Pacific Northwest and hopefully northern California, suppressing the high further to the southeast.
Forecast: Clear skies through Tuesday with a warming trend. Mostly clear and hot Tuesday night through Saturday.

Two Week Outlook: June 17 through June 23: this model shows a wide ranging high pressure system over the western US, resulting in above average temperatures and dry conditions.
June: This model is indicating a ridge of upper level high pressure will be more dominant over the Desert Southwest and, to a lesser extent, California, resulting in above average temperatures for the month with the usual dry conditions prevailing.
June, July, August: This model mimics the pattern of recent years, indicating high pressure over the Desert Southwest being the most dominant feature, resulting in above average temperatures. Theoretically, this pattern blocks monsoonal moisture from moving northward. Typically, there’s little to no precipitation anyway, and that will be the case this summer.
Winds Discussion: Winds during the afternoons and evenings will be generally out of the northwest at around 8 to 15 MPH. Winds during the night and morning hours will be generally at or less than 8 MPH with periods of near calm conditions through Tuesday.
