June 15, 2021/report

June 15, 2021

Central California is caught between a trough of low pressure moving through the Pacific Northwest and building high pressure over the Four Corners region.  There is enough modified marine air seeping into the valley to give us one last day of near average temperatures.  Winds through Pacheco Pass are currently sustained at 21 MPH.  That flow will cease later today as strong upper level high pressure over the desert southwest expands westward over California.  The clockwise flow around the high is turning the winds aloft over southern California out of the south.  The balloon sounding above San Diego indicated a southerly flow from 5,000 to 30,000 feet.  High clouds are embedded within this flow and have made it as far north as San Bernardino and Los Angeles Counties.

Wednesday will see the beginning of a searing heat wave which will last through at least next Monday.  Strong upper level high pressure and its sinking air will drive readings to near record territory Friday through Sunday.  Models are indicating valley temperatures will range from 107 in the cooler locations to as high as 112 in the hottest regions.

The high will weaken slightly Monday and even  more so Tuesday, however it may be Wednesday of next week before readings dip into double digits.  Models show a weak low just off the northern California coast by Monday night, possibly forming a cut off low just off shore late Tuesday.  Some models show this feature remaining off the central coast for several days.

Forecast: Mostly clear today.  Mostly clear and hot Wednesday with occasional high clouds.  Mostly clear and extremely hot Thursday through Sunday with occasional high clouds.  Mostly clear Monday through Tuesday with a slow cooling trend.

Two Week Outlook:  June 21 through June 29:  this model shows a wide ranging high pressure system over the western US, resulting in above average temperatures and dry conditions.

June:  This model is indicating a ridge of upper level high pressure will be more dominant over the Desert Southwest and, to a lesser extent, California, resulting in above average temperatures for the month with the usual dry conditions prevailing.

June, July, August: This model mimics the pattern of recent years, indicating high pressure over the Desert Southwest being the most dominant feature, resulting  in above average temperatures.  Theoretically, this pattern blocks monsoonal moisture from moving northward.  Typically, there’s little to no precipitation anyway, and that will be the case this summer.

Winds Discussion:  Winds during the afternoons and evenings will be generally out of the northwest at around 8 to 15 MPH.  Winds during the night and morning hours will be generally at or less than 8 MPH with local gusts to 20 MPH afternoons and evenings along with periods of near calm conditions through Friday.
