Forecast

June 16, 2021/report

An abbreviated report as John starts chemo this morning.

June 16, 2021

The upcoming heat wave could actually result in the hottest temperatures of the summer, even though the calendar summer is still several days off.  Models still indicate readings soaring into the 107 to 112 range Friday and Saturday with only minor moderation Sunday.  Strong upper  level high pressure has now  parked over the Four Corners region while the low over the Pacific Northwest has migrated northward into western Canada.  The clockwise flow around the high is rotating mid and high level moisture in from the subtropics, so in and out mid and high level clouds can be expected the next few days.  However, they will not be widespread enough to blunt the heat.  It is possible a few thunderstorms could occur over the summit of the Sierra Nevada.

The high will maintain its position through Sunday.  By Sunday night and Monday, a weak low shows up on models off the northern California coast, weakening the high enough for the beginning of a cooling trend.  By Tuesday, the marine layer should deepen enough to  move through the Delta and down the valley, lowering temperatures back into double digits with readings returning to near average values by Thursday.  Incidentally, the marine  layer at Monterey this morning has been suppressed to 600 feet with winds at Travis AFB and Pacheco Pass being light and variable.

Forecast: Periods of mid and high level clouds at times, otherwise it will be mostly clear and warmer today.  There will be occasional high clouds tonight through Sunday. Otherwise, it will be mostly clear and extremely hot.  Mostly clear Sunday night through Wednesday with a slow cooling trend.

Short Term:  High temperatures today will generally warm to near the century mark.  Lows tonight north of Kern County will cool into the mid to upper 60s with upper 60s to mid 70s in Kern County.  Highs Thursday will range between 106 and 109.  Lows Thursday night will cool into the low to mid 70s north of Kern County and in the  mid 70s to near 80 in Kern County.  Highs Friday will range between 108 and 112.
