A strong belt of upper level high pressure now stretches from roughly the Mississippi River across the Desert Southwest and into California before going out to sea. High level subtropical moisture continues to rotate around the bottom of the high then northeastward through southern and central California. A few lightning strikes were observed over the Sierra Nevada and the Kern County mountains overnight. The only element of our weather to possibly keep temperatures under 110 today will be possible cloud cover. However, satellite imagery shows the cloud cover thinning out over southern California so look for searing heat through the weekend, though a little less so on Sunday.
By Sunday evening, the high will begin to shift further south and east in response to a weak upper low developing off the northern and central coasts. Models show this low eventually opening up into a trough from the Pacific Northwest into California Tuesday and Wednesday. this will turn the winds west/southwest over California, ending the subtropical moisture. The marine layer will also rapidly deepen and will surge inland by Tuesday, lowering temperatures into double digits by midweek. Some models show the low moving further off shore by next weekend as another high builds over the western states.
Incidentally, Palm Springs hit 123 yesterday as did Ocotillo while Imperial hit 119 and Tehachapi 102.
Forecast: partly cloudy this morning. mostly clear with occasional high clouds tonight and Saturday and extremely hot. Mostly clear and hot Saturday night through Monday. Mostly clear and cooler Tuesday through Friday.

Two Week Outlook: June 23 through July 1: this model shows a wide ranging high pressure system over the western US, resulting in above average temperatures and dry conditions.
June: This model is indicating a ridge of upper level high pressure will be more dominant over the Desert Southwest and, to a lesser extent, California, resulting in above average temperatures for the month with the usual dry conditions prevailing.
June, July, August: This model mimics the pattern of recent years, indicating high pressure over the Desert Southwest being the most dominant feature, resulting in above average temperatures. Theoretically, this pattern blocks monsoonal moisture from moving northward. Typically, there’s little to no precipitation anyway, and that will be the case this summer.
Winds Discussion: Winds will be generally out of the northwest afternoons and evenings at 8 to 15 MPH with stronger gusts through Saturday. Winds during the night and morning hours will be variable to no more than 8 MPH with periods of near calm conditions. Winds later Sunday and Monday will be out of the west/northwest at 10 to 20 MPH with stronger gusts.
