Taft recorded a scorching high temperature yesterday of 113, Lemoore 112, Fresno and Porterville 111. I realize summer hasn’t even arrived on the calendar yet, but these may be the high temperatures of the summer. Similar conditions can be expected this afternoon.
Strong upper level high pressure is centered over Arizona this morning. it interconnects with another high off the northern California coast. This minor difference in the pattern has turned the winds aloft more southwesterly, unlike the past 48 hours where subtropical moisture was pumped in from the southeast via the monsoon.
By Sunday afternoon, a weak low center will be developing off the northern and central California coast. The marine layer, which currently stands at 1,200 feet will deepen enough Sunday to move through the Delta then over gaps and passes further south Sunday night and Monday. Sunday will be hot, but progressively cooler as the work week moves on as the low remains off the northern California coast and morphs into a trough extending from Oregon through central California. Most models project the low will move further off shore this coming weekend, which may lead to another round of triple digits.
Forecast: Mostly clear and extremely hot today. Mostly clear and hot Sunday through Monday. Mostly clear and cooler Monday night through Friday. Mostly clear and warmer Saturday.

Two Week Outlook: June 23 through July 1: this model shows a wide ranging high pressure system over the western US, resulting in above average temperatures and dry conditions.
June: This model is indicating a ridge of upper level high pressure will be more dominant over the Desert Southwest and, to a lesser extent, California, resulting in above average temperatures for the month with the usual dry conditions prevailing.
June, July, August: This model mimics the pattern of recent years, indicating high pressure over the Desert Southwest being the most dominant feature, resulting in above average temperatures. Theoretically, this pattern blocks monsoonal moisture from moving northward. Typically, there’s little to no precipitation anyway, and that will be the case this summer.
Winds Discussion: Winds will be generally out of the northwest afternoons and evenings at 8 to 15 MPH with stronger gusts through today. Winds during the night and morning hours will be variable to no more than 8 MPH with periods of near calm conditions. Winds later Sunday through Tuesday will be out of the west/northwest at 10 to 20 MPH with stronger gusts.
