July 1, 2021

The first month of metrological summer was a hot one this year.  This info comes as no surprise to anyone.  It was the fourth hottest June on record in Bakersfield, the third hottest at Hanford, and the second hottest at Fresno.  The good news is, temperatures are down anywhere from 4 to 8 degrees from yesterday at this time.  Upper level high pressure has weakened a tad and as a result the marine layer has deepened up to 2,300 feet.  The difference in pressure between the coast and the interior is fairly weak.  Even so, marine air is surging through the Delta.  At last report, Travis AFB was reporting winds out of the southwest at 26 MPH, gusting to 32.  Unfortunately, there is no report from Pacheco Pass at this hour.  No doubt there is some modified sea breeze leaking through Cottonwood Pass as well.

Temperature forecasting today will be tricky at best.  In the broad picture, upper level high pressure extends from central Canada southwestward to off shore California.  Enough monsoon moisture is available for another flare up of scattered thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada this afternoon and evening.

By Friday, the main upper high will set up shop over the Four Corners region, generating a south/southeast flow over the weekend.  The high will expand westward, maintaining triple digits.

Models for next week are very consistent, showing a broad expanse of high pressure over the west, meaning the first week of July and beyond will again experience above average temperatures along with daily chances of afternoon and evening thunderstorm over the Sierra Nevada.

Two Week Outlook:  July 7 through July 13:  This model shows an active monsoon into the Desert Southwest and, to a lesser extent, southern California and the Sierra Nevada.  This pattern always offers a small chance of some rain with above average temperatures continuing.

July:  The 30 day outlook for July follows the trend set in June with above average temperatures and upper level high pressure that’s stronger than usual.  The typical dry conditions will continue.

July, August, September: Above average temperatures can be expected for the next three months.  This model is given equal chance of rain for not only California but also the parched desert southwest.

Winds Discussion:  During the afternoon and evening, winds will be mainly out of the northwest at 5 to 12 MPH.  During the night and morning hours, winds will be generally at or less than 10 MPH with periods of near calm conditions.

Rain: dry weather will continue for at least the next 7 to 10 days.
