July 3, 2021/report

July 3, 2021

A slug of monsoon moisture has worked its way northwestward into central California.  The clockwise flow around the high is moving high level subtropical moisture from old Mexico then northwestward into California.  Isolated thunderstorms will again be the order of the day over the high Sierra the next couple of afternoons.  We continue to ride a balancing act at the surface as pressure is only slightly lower over the interior.  Enough of the modified sea breeze will move through the Delta to maintain temperatures in the upper 90s from Merced County north.  From Madera County south, readings in the lower 100s can be anticipated.  Currently at Pacheco Pass, winds are out of the west sustained at 17 MPH while at Travis AFB in the Delta, winds are out of the southwest at 22 gusting to 28 MPH.

Models through midweek pretty much maintain the west over California and the rest of the west so the hot weather will continue.  By next weekend, most models project the high will shift further west over California for even hotter temperatures, possibly in the 106 to 111 range.

Forecast: Variable cloudiness at times through Sunday evening.  Mostly clear with occasional high clouds Monday through Saturday and continued hot.

Two Week Outlook:  July 7 through July 13:  This model shows an active monsoon into the Desert Southwest and, to a lesser extent, southern California and the Sierra Nevada.  This pattern always offers a small chance of some rain with above average temperatures continuing.

July:  The 30 day outlook for July follows the trend set in June with above average temperatures and upper level high pressure that’s stronger than usual.  The typical dry conditions will continue.

July, August, September: Above average temperatures can be expected for the next three months.  This model is given equal chance of rain for not only California but also the parched desert southwest.

Winds Discussion:  During the afternoon and evening, winds will be mainly out of the northwest at 5 to 12 MPH.  During the night and morning hours, winds will be generally at or less than 10 MPH with periods of near calm conditions.
