July 7, 2021/report

We apologize for the shortened report this morning.  It’s chemo day number  2 for John and his appointment is early.  Thank you so much for your understanding and support.

July 7, 2021

Upper level high pressure, as expected, is slowly retrograding towards the west and is centered over southern Utah this morning.  the marine layer is slightly lower and is right at 2,000 feet deep at Monterey.  The flow at the surface remains on shore, but it is weak.  Winds up at Travis AFB in the Delta are out of the southwest at 27 MPH, gusting to 31.  However, at Pacheco Pass winds are now light and variable.  The upper levels of the atmosphere are very similar to what they were 24 hours ago.  Both Blue Canyon and Sandberg’s readings are identical to what they were yesterday at this time.  Even though it’s hot, today will be the last day of moderately hot temperatures.  Beginning Thursday, readings will jump into the 104 to 107 degree range then into the 106 to 111 range Friday.  (But it’s a dry heat.)  By Saturday morning, the center of circulation will be over Nevada then it will be centered directly over California Sunday and Monday.  To make matters worse, this high will be unusually strong, driving temperatures at or above 110 in many locations Saturday through Monday.  For now, we’ll give only a slight chance of isolated thunderstorms over the summit of the Sierra Nevada as the cap in the atmosphere under that dome of high pressure will be too strong for storms to rise high enough to produce precipitation.  Also, overnight lows will be in the mid to upper 70s in the rural areas and the low to mid 80s in larger cities.

I really don’t see any significant cooling until Thursday of next week.  It appears I’ll have to eat my words as earlier this summer I mentioned in one of the past heat waves, that readings then would be the hottest of the summer.

Forecast: Mostly clear and hot through Thursday.  Mostly clear and extremely hot Friday through Monday.  Mostly clear  Wednesday and continued hot.  Expect occasional high clouds through the period.

Temperatures:  High temperatures today will range from 98 to 101, warming to 104 to 107 Wednesday and 107 to 112 Friday.  Lows tonight north of Kern County will be in the mid to upper 60s, climbing into the low to mid 70s Friday night.  in Kern County, lows tonight will range in the low to mid 70s, climbing into the lower 80s Thursday.
