The bulk of the monsoon moisture has moved into Nevada and northern California. Nocturnal thunderstorms percolated along the summit of the Sierra Nevada overnight. For you lightning lovers, I’m sorry if you missed it. Here where I live, lightning every .25 second occurs every spring and summer.
Upper level high pressure continues to meander, although it’s poorly defined. But it’s centered somewhere near the Four Corners region. Moisture will continue to stream north to northeast, rotating clockwise around the western periphery of the high. For the next few days, just occasional high clouds can be expected with continued hot temperatures.
The marine layer at Monterey at this hour is only near 1,200 feet deep with only minimal pressure differences between the coast and the interior. Currently, winds at Travis AFB in the Delta are sustained out of the southwest at just 14 MPH.
Some models are indicating more of a southwest flow will develop this weekend, creating more of an onshore flow at the surface with southwest winds aloft, which are typically much drier. The result will be mid to upper 90s under mostly clear skies.
Forecast: Partly cloudy for a time this morning. mostly clear this afternoon with occasional high clouds and continued hot. Mostly clear Monday night through Friday night and continued hot. Mostly clear Friday night through Monday and marginally cooler.

Two Week Outlook: July 24 through July 30 The monsoon is alive and well on this model and is moving into the Desert Southwest. On occasion, moisture from the monsoon works its way far enough west to affect central California. Occasional periods of afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms are likely over the Sierra Nevada. Measurable rain is unlikely, but cannot be eliminated over the valley floor. Temperatures will remain above average.
July: The 30 day outlook for July follows the trend set in June with above average temperatures and upper level high pressure that’s stronger than usual. The typical dry conditions will continue.
July, August, September: Above average temperatures can be expected for the next three months. This model is given equal chance of rain for not only California but also the parched desert southwest.
Winds Discussion: During the afternoon and evening, winds will be mainly out of the northwest at 5 to 12 MPH. During the night and morning hours, winds will be generally at or less than 10 MPH with periods of near calm conditions. Local gusts near 20 MPH are possible, mainly along the west side, during the later afternoon and overnight hours.
Rain: Expect dry conditions for at least the next 7 to 10 days.
