Help is definitely on the way. However, we have to get through today. Today may very well turn out to be one of the hottest days of what has been a very hot summer. At the upper levels of the atmosphere, high pressure is directly over central California. This will drive readings near the 110 degree mark this afternoon in those typical hot spots.
A weak easterly flow continues over central California. There’s also enough lingering monsoonal moisture available for one more day of isolated thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada. Debris clouds from these storms will move over the valley floor, but not enough to limit a scorching afternoon.
The break we’ve been looking for for much of the summer is already taking shape over western Canada. Twenty four hours from now, a trough of low pressure will extend from central Canada to northern California. Upper winds are currently out of the east but they will become westerly and, by Thursday and Friday, northwesterly. This will put an end to any monsoonal moisture moving into California. A decent on shore flow will also begin Tuesday, however it will be Wednesday before we see those double digits return.
Medium range models are indicating a dominant trough of low pressure over the western US with temperatures dropping marginally below average on Wednesday. And, as occasional bursts of marine air move inland, readings generally in the mid 90s will continue through the weekend. With a bit of luck, these temperatures may last through the middle of next week.
Forecast: Other than occasional high clouds today, it will be mostly clear and extremely hot. Mostly clear tonight through Friday with a cooling trend. Mostly clear Friday night through Monday.
