We are temporarily under the influence of upper level high pressure. This will ensure a dry weekend. However, we will be pounded by a blockbuster winter storm with the chance of precipitation as early as Sunday night. Widespread precipitation can be expected Monday through Tuesday evening. This will be a slow moving event and will go a long way in ensuring a good chance of decent precipitation for central California. The Sierra Nevada foothills should pick up 3 to 5 inches of rain from Sunday night through Tuesday night and anywhere from 4 to 8 feet of new snow over the highest elevations. All the key ingredients are coming together.
By late Sunday night, an intense winter storm will be off the Oregon/northern California coast with the jet stream flanked underneath the low. Embedded within the jet stream will initially be copious amounts of tropical moisture. On the valley floor, anywhere from ¾ of an inch to 1 ½ inches is possible.
The storm will slowly drag itself across central California Tuesday. It will slide into the interior west Wednesday, ending precipitation in central California. The water situation will definitely be improved by a generous snowpack. Models are also still trending towards another Pacific storm driving into California from Thursday into Friday. This won’t be nearly as an intense a storm, but models still paint a picture of another wet episode moving into California, adding another layer to the skiers’ delight.
After next Friday, we should see several days of dry weather. However, the two week model indicates another round of precipitation just before Christmas.
Forecast: Partly cloudy today and tonight with areas of ground fog developing. Increasing cloudiness Sunday. A chance of rain Sunday night, mainly from Fresno County north. Rain, heavy at times, Monday through Tuesday, turning more showery Tuesday night. Mostly to partly cloudy Wednesday. Increasing cloudiness again Wednesday night. Showers becoming likely Thursday into Friday. Mostly to partly cloudy Friday through Saturday.

Two Week Outlook: December 17 through the 23: More and more, models are indicating an active weather pattern with a good chance of precipitation during this period. These storms will have their origins in the Gulf of Alaska, so expect below average temperatures.
December, January, February: If this model is to be believed at all, temperatures will be marginally above average over central California. This model also depicts the main storm track continuing into the Pacific Northwest with somewhat below average precipitation over the southern 2/3 of California.
Wind Discussion: Winds will be mainly out of the northwest at around 6 to 12 mph, diminishing later today with light winds tonight. Winds Sunday will be out of the southeast at 8 to 15 mph, increasing to 15 to 25 mph late Sunday night through Monday night with gusts to 35 mph possible. Winds Tuesday will become out of the northwest at 10 to 20 mph with stronger gusts.
Rain: The chance of rain will again pick up Sunday night, mainly from Fresno County north. From Monday through Tuesday, heavy amounts of rain are likely over the entire valley. The amount of moisture involved with the subtropical jet stream is likely to overcome the typical rain shadow along the west side and in Kern County, so even Bakersfield could pick up more than ½ inch.
Rain will taper off by Wednesday morning, however a new storm will roll out of the Gulf of Alaska Thursday into Friday. This system is not nearly as strong, but it will keep the precipitation machine rolling along.
Frost: This morning’s temperatures are generally in the lower 30s at the vast majority of locations. Lindsay came in at 29 degrees and McFarland 28 as of 6:00am. Conditions tonight should be similar with widespread lower 30s and upper 20s in the coldest locations. All locations will be above freezing Monday through Thursday. After a system moves through Thursday, temperatures will chill down into the low to mid 30s as the air mass swinging southward behind the Thursday storm is cold, but more or less typical for mid December.
