Forecast

January 5, 2022/pm report

January 5, 2022

There is a myriad of conditions out there this afternoon. Visalia is reporting an overcast based at 3,300 feet, Lemoore is reporting broken clouds at 3,200 feet while Madera is reporting a cloud deck at 2,600 feet. We now have a fairly well established warm air inversion trapping low level moisture on the valley floor. Where skies have cleared this afternoon, ground fog will have no problem forming as dew points are in the mid 40s to near 50.

Upper level high pressure is just off the central coast this afternoon and continues to expand westward and northward. The next weather system will track from west to east into Oregon and northern California, leaving the southern two-thirds of California dry. Once this system shifts into the Great Basin, a large ridge will build over the western one-third of the US with a mammoth ridge covering western  Canada as far north as the Yukon territories. This one should allow for dry, stable weather for at least the next week to possibly ten days.  The main challenge after Friday will be extensive fog and/or low clouds. This will in part determine both daytime highs and overnight lows. With dew points pressing 50, there’s’ no chance of frost for the short term.

Forecast: a combination of fog and/or low clouds tonight. Fog and/or low clouds Thursday and Friday mornings with a chance of afternoon clearing. Fog and/or low clouds Friday evening and on through Wednesday of next week with some afternoon clearing.
