Forecast

January 5, 2022/report

January 5, 2022

Temperatures this morning are anywhere from 5 to 16 degrees warmer than 24 hours ago while dew points are up 5 to 15 degrees. All this is due to an influx of moist air which began surging down the valley yesterday afternoon and last night. The result was the formation of a low cloud deck. The base of the overcast is rather ragged. It ranges from 3900 feet at Bakersfield to just 200 feet at Madera. With the injection of low level moisture, frost will not be a problem for at least the next week and possibly longer.

In the big picture, a large high is centered off the central coast and is building to the north and east. We’re going to go ahead and take any chance of rain out of the forecast for Friday as the high will  bump the next weather system too far to the north to have much of an impact here.

Over the weekend, a very large high will center over the Four   Corners region with a mammoth ridge building far to the north in northwest Canada. This will ensure arctic air masses will slide east of the Rockies while the western states enjoy very dry and stable weather. With a strong warm air inversion, the pattern will be ripe for extensive fog and low clouds om the valley floor with mostly clear skies and well above average temperatures over the mountain areas.

Forecast: Low overcast this morning,  partial afternoon clearing. Areas of low clouds and fog this afternoon and Thursday with partial afternoon clearing. Variable cloudiness Thursday night and Friday night with areas of night and morning fog and low clouds. From Saturday through Wednesday expect widespread night and morning low clouds and fog with clearing in some areas in the afternoon.

Two Week Outlook:  January 11 through January 17: This model has reverted to a dry forecast with above average temperatures.

January:  This model doesn’t really indicate a trend that would favor above or below precipitation. The active storm track in the Pacific Northwest will continue. Both temperatures and precipitation should be close to seasonal averages.

January, February, March: The trend of below average temperatures of late continues on the 90 day forecast which indicates temperatures will be slightly below average. Below average precipitation is anticipated over the Desert Southwest and the southern half of California with near average precipitation from Fresno County north.

Wind Discussion: Winds will be generally at or less than 6 MPH with periods of near calm conditions through Thursday.

Rain:  Expect dry weather for the next 7 to possibly 10 d

Frost: All locations will be above freezing tonight and each night for the next week and quite possibly longer. It’s possible if the fog and low clods don’t take over, lows could drop into the lower 30s.
