The center of circulation around upper level high pressure is just about right overhead. The resultant warm air inversion has tracked a layer of moisture on the valley floor. We all know this time of year this is conducive for fog and low clouds, and each is widespread this morning. The freezing level has jumped up to 12,500 feet. The mountain areas reflect this warm air aloft. For example, Grapevine Peak at an elevation of 4,500 feet was reporting a balmy 54 at 6:00am. Temperatures will be determined by the amount of clearing or the lack thereof each afternoon through the weekend and well into next week.
A weather system will track over the top of the high, spreading showers as far south as a Bay Area/Sacramento/Tahoe line. The only impact here will be some increase in higher level clouds Friday. Behind this system, strong upper level high pressure will center over the Great Basin and will build a ridge through western Canada all the way up into the Yukon Territories. This high will be the dominant player in our weather through at least the middle of next week. Models are indicating that a blocking ridge pattern will be in place for the next 10 days with no chance of precipitation. Extensive fog and low clouds with partial afternoon clearing each day for the foreseeable future.
Forecast: Low overcast and/or fog with partial afternoon clearing through Sunday. Fog and/or low clouds will continue Sunday night through Thursday with partial afternoon clearing.
Short Term:
Temperatures this afternoon where it clears will rise into the low to mid 50s. Where it does not clear, reading will range in the upper 40s to the lower 50s. Overnight lows each night will chill into the low to mid 40s. high temperatures each afternoon longer term will warm into the low to mid 50s where it clears and the upper 40s to lower 50s where the overcast remains in place.

Two Week Outlook: January 11 through January 17: This model has reverted to a dry forecast with above average temperatures.
January: This model doesn’t really indicate a trend that would favor above or below precipitation. The active storm track in the Pacific Northwest will continue. Both temperatures and precipitation should be close to seasonal averages.
January, February, March: The trend of below average temperatures of late continues on the 90 day forecast which indicates temperatures will be slightly below average. Below average precipitation is anticipated over the Desert Southwest and the southern half of California with near average precipitation from Fresno County north.
Wind Discussion: Winds will be generally at or less than 6 MPH with periods of near calm conditions through Thursday.
Rain: Expect dry weather for the next 7 to possibly 10 days.
Frost: All locations will be above freezing tonight and each night for the next week and quite possibly longer. It’s possible if the fog and low clods don’t take over, lows could drop into the lower 30s.
