The top portion of upper level high pressure is temporarily giving way to a low pressure system off the southern Oregon coast. The associated cold front is currently moving through northern California and will spread cloud cover over central California later today. A few sprinkles could occur as far south as Merced County this afternoon and tonight. However, nothing measurable is anticipated south of a Bay Area/Stockton line. A weak southerly flow drove temperatures into the 60 degree range yesterday. The combination of increasing cloud cover and a marginally cooler air mass mean temperatures will only rise into the low to mid 50s today and Saturday.
Behind this system, strong upper level high pressure will center over the Great Basin with a ridge extending through western Canada, reaching the Yukon Territories. A weak upper low will form off the southern California coast Sunday night and will become a cut off low somewhere just off the coast of northern Baja by Monday. The circulation around the low will bring the winds aloft out of the northeast. This will generate an off shore flow, raising temperatures above average beginning Sunday. In fact, readings will be well above average unless the fog and low clouds take over to minimize solar heating.
Models this morning still indicate a dry weather pattern for the next week to possibly ten days.
Forecast: Areas of fog and low clouds. Otherwise, expect variable cloudiness through Saturday morning. Areas of fog and low clouds with hazy sunshine afternoons Saturday night through Friday of next week.

Two Week Outlook: January 11 through January 17: This model has reverted to a dry forecast with above average temperatures.
January: This model doesn’t really indicate a trend that would favor above or below precipitation. The active storm track in the Pacific Northwest will continue. Both temperatures and precipitation should be close to seasonal averages.
January, February, March: The trend of below average temperatures of late continues on the 90 day forecast which indicates temperatures will be slightly below average. Below average precipitation is anticipated over the Desert Southwest and the southern half of California with near average precipitation from Fresno County north.
Wind Discussion: Winds will be generally at or less than 6 MPH with periods of near calm conditions through Tuesday.
Rain: Expect dry weather for the next 7 to possibly 10 days.
Frost: All locations will be above freezing tonight and each night for the next week and quite possibly longer.
