Forecast

January 10, 2022/report

January 10, 2022

There is a combination of low clouds, ground fog, and higher clouds above the fog this morning. A weak trough of low pressure tried to move inland overnight, but essentially fell apart. The southern portion of the trough is now pinched off and will form a cut off low southwest of San Diego. It will move southward over northern Baja, possibly even spreading some showers into the Desert Southwest later this week. All of this will be too far to the south to have an impact on our weather. The high will rebuild tonight through Wednesday, ridging northward into western Canada. As Pacific storms try to move into the western US, they are essentially eaten alive by a blocking shield of high pressure. All of the short and medium range models indicate this blocking ridge pattern will continue indefinitely.

The main challenge will continue to be night and morning fog and low clouds and their effects on temperatures. Since some areas are relatively fog free this morning, most locations will observe filtered sunlight due to haze and high clouds. Today is essentially a preview for the next week to possibly ten days.

Forecast: Areas of fog and/or low clouds with hazy afternoon sunshine in most areas during the afternoons with occasional periods of high clouds above the fog through Monday of next week.

Two Week Outlook:  January 17 through January 23: This model has reverted to a dry forecast with above average temperatures.

January:  This model doesn’t really indicate a trend that would favor above or below precipitation. The active storm track in the Pacific Northwest will continue. Both temperatures and precipitation should be close to seasonal averages.

January, February, March: The trend of below average temperatures of late continues on the 90 day forecast which indicates temperatures will be slightly below average. Below average precipitation is anticipated over the Desert Southwest and the southern half of California with near average precipitation from Fresno County north.

Wind Discussion: Winds will be generally at or less than 6 MPH with periods of near calm conditions through Thursday.

Rain:  Expect dry weather for the next 7 to possibly 10 days.

Frost: All locations will be above 32 degrees tonight and each night this week. Low lying river bottom, where skies remain clear during the overnight hours, will near the 32 degree mark. For now, there’s nothing on models suggesting a particularly cold pattern on the horizon.
