Forecast

January 22, 2022/report

January 22, 2022

Considerable amounts of fog extend from roughly the Tulare County Farm Show northward through Madera County with patchy fog elsewhere. A dry upper low is sinking southward into southeast California while upper level high pressure wraps around the top of the low, creating a strong northeasterly flow aloft. In addition, barometric pressure is much lower along the southern California coast than over the Great Basin. For example, the current altimeter reading at Salt Lake City is 30.38 inches of mercury while LAX is reporting 29.88.

The southern Sierra Nevada and the Kern County mountains will have another 24 hours or so of strong northeast winds while the valley floor will be relatively calm, with little in the way of wind. Dew points have come down slightly. This will allow overnight low temperatures to drop to near freezing in river bottom type locations, but nothing more.

For the next 7 days, the blocking ridge pattern will continue. There is some indication of an overall shift in the global pattern around the end of the month which may begin to allow Pacific storms to affect the Pacific Northwest and  northern California. The two week model is picking up on this and is now calling for at least equal chances of rain.

Forecast: Outside of areas of night and morning fog and low clouds and occasional high clouds, it will be mostly clear and hazy through next Saturday.

Two Week Outlook:  January 28 through February   This model finally breaks down the blocking ridge of high pressure, allowing storms to return to the Pacific Northwest and northern California. This model is suggesting above average precipitation with below average temperatures.

February:  The guidance on this model does not show any particular pattern that would favor temperatures or precipitation. Basically what it’s saying is there’s equal chances of above or below average rain as well as above or below average temperatures. Flip a coin.

February, March, April: There are no dominant trends on this model favoring above or below average precipitation. Temperatures during this period should be fairly close to seasonal values.

Wind Discussion: Winds will be generally at or less than 6 MPH with periods of near calm conditions through Tuesday.

Rain:  Expect dry weather for the next 7 to possibly 10 days.

Frost: It is possible low lying frost pockets could dip into the lower 30s over the next couple of nights as dew points have lowered slightly in response due to a strong off shore flow mixing down to the surface. Most locations, however, will range between 33 and 38. Still nothing longer term suggesting a particularly cold weather pattern.
