Forecast

January 29, 2022/report

January 29, 2022

Temperatures are a tad milder this morning due to variable amounts of mid and high level clouds which have spread over central California from a weak cut off low off the southern California coast. The surface flow is still decidedly off shore, however the pressure gradient is not as strong today so a repeat of the gusty winds in Kern County is not anticipated. The off shore flow  has mixed down some drier air, especially in Kern County, so it’s possible a few more locations tonight could dip down to near freezing with most locations remaining in the low to mid 30s.

In the big picture, there is simply not a lot to talk about. A flat zone of upper level high pressure will rebuild along the California coast, eventually ridging into the Gulf of Alaska. A weak trough of low pressure will move through around the middle of next week for a minor cooling trend. This will start up a northwest flow aloft along the coast and will also maintain dry weather through the first week in February.

The medium range outlook remains the same. A big high will be along the Pacific coast, blocking any potential precipitation from moving anywhere near California.

Forecast: Variable cloudiness through tonight. Mostly clear Sunday through next Saturday with patchy night and morning fog.

Two Week Outlook:  February 4 through February 10: this time around, this model is reverting back to the same old thing. A large ridge of upper level high pressure will cover the eastern Pacific and the western one-third of the US, meaning the chance of rain will be very low with above average temperatures.

February:  The guidance on this model does not show any particular pattern that would favor temperatures or precipitation. Basically, what it’s saying is there’s equal chances of above or below average rain as well as above or below average temperatures. Flip a coin.

February, March, April: There are no dominant trends on this model favoring above or below average precipitation. Temperatures during this period should be fairly close to seasonal values.

Wind Discussion: Winds will be generally at or less than 6 MPH with periods of near calm conditions through Tuesday.

Rain: Expect dry conditions for the next 7 to 10 days.

Frost: Cloud cover kept temperatures generally above freezing overnight. The upper low responsible for the cloud deck will move through northern Baja tonight and Sunday, allowing skies to clear tonight to put us back to square one with widespread low to mid 30s. Coldest locations will drop down to 29 to 31 in those traditional cold pockets with most locations ranging from 32 to 38. Expect similar conditions for the next several nights..
