Forecast

February 10, 2022/report

February 10, 2022

Strong upper level high pressure is centered near the California/Oregon border and will drift slowly southward  until its virtually right overhead this coming weekend. The cap over the valley with warm descending air above is creating poor air quality and very hazy conditions. This will continue through Sunday. The high will reach its peak Saturday and Sunday when warmest locations on the valley floor hit the 80 degree mark, which is extremely early. A low pressure system currently in the Gulf of Alaska will slide southward into the Pacific Northwest Sunday then southward over central California by late Monday night and Tuesday. There is a trend on models for showers to develop along the entire Sierra Nevada and the chance for light scattered showers over the valley floor. This appears to be the type of system that will not carry much water, but will still be enough for .10 in some locations with nothing in other locations. Behind this system, a big wall of upper level high pressure will again be the main feature in the weather pattern as we return to a dry ridge pattern.

Forecast: Mostly clear skies through Sunday night and continued hazy. Mostly clear Monday morning. Increasing cloudiness Monday afternoon. mostly cloudy Monday night and Tuesday with a chance of light scattered showers. Partly cloudy Wednesday. Becoming mostly clear Wednesday night and Thursday.

Two Week Outlook:  February 16 through February 22  This model continues to show a blocking ridge pattern along the west coast. Potential Pacific storms are driven far to the  north into Alaska then diving southward into the middle of the country. This will mean above average temperatures will continue with little chance of rain.

February:  The guidance on this model does not show any particular pattern that would favor temperatures or precipitation. Basically, what it’s saying is there’s equal chances of above or below average rain as well as above or below average temperatures. Flip a coin.

February, March, April: There are no dominant trends on this model favoring above or below average precipitation. Temperatures during this period should be fairly close to seasonal values.

Wind Discussion: Winds will be generally at or less than 7 MPH through Monday with periods of near calm conditions.

Rain: Dry weather will continue through Monday. A chance of light scattered showers exists for late Monday night through Tuesday evening as a rather compact low pressure system moves through. This system will not be carrying much water. If it rains at all, most locations will receive .10 or less. This system will quickly move eastward for a return to dry weather Wednesday and continuing for at least the next week thereafter.

Frost: All locations will be above freezing tonight and will remain above freezing through at least the middle of next week.
