March 6, 2022/report

March 6, 2022

Plenty of lower level  cloud cover blankets much of Kern and Tulare Counties this morning. Even with the cloud cover, most locations have chilled into the low to mid 30s as of 6:00am. The very cold upper low has moved off to the east into the Four Corners region. The freezing level has moved up some but is still very low and stands at 5,200 feet at Oakland. Yesterday at this time, the reading was 2,600 feet. California is sandwiched between a southwest to northeast oriented high over the eastern Pacific with a ridge extending into northwest Canada and a cold low over the desert southwest. this continues to pump cold air into California so areas of frost are likely the next few nights. A trough of low pressure will move into the interior west Wednesday night and Thursday, too far to the east for active weather over us. It will, however, slow the warming trend. By the weekend, the high will have shifted overhead, driving temperatures into the 70s. medium range models for next week show a zonal or westerly flow across the eastern Pacific and into the western US. The weather will be active over the Pacific Northwest and northern California from time to time, but for now it appears we will be just south of the activity.

Forecast: Partly cloudy today. Mostly clear with occasional high clouds tonight through Sunday.

Two Week Outlook:  March 11 through March 17: Upper level high pressure will build into the western ¼ of the US, resulting in a period of dry weather with temperatures rising to above average.

March:  The 30 day outlook for the month of March really does not show much guidance for either precipitation or temperatures. Essentially what it says is near average temperatures with near average precipitation.

March, April, May: The March, April, May period moves us into the traditional beginning of the dry season. This model is showing below average precipitation for most of the state. Guidance is fairly flat as far as temperatures are concerned as it indicates near average temperatures.

Wind Discussion: Winds through Wednesday will be generally out of the northwest afternoons and early evenings 5 to 10 mph. during the night and  morning hours, winds will be generally at or less than 5 mph with periods of near calm conditions.

Rain:  Expect dry weather for at least the next 7 to 10 days.

Frost:  The coldest location this morning as of 6:00am was Fowler at 29 degrees. Most other locations dropped into the low to mid 30s. more locations will be at or marginally below freezing tonight as  the upslope clouds currently over portions of the valley begin to dissipate due to a dry northerly flow aloft.. both Monday and Tuesday mornings, widespread low to mid 30s can be expected with the coldest locations down to 27 to 28 degrees. With anticipated mid afternoon dew points in the low to mdi 30s, most flat terrain real estate will range from 29 to 35 with hillsides above freezing. The inversion will be somewhat better tonight with temperatures at 34 feet generally  from 4 to 8 degrees warmer at most locations. For Wednesday morning, expect most locations to range from 2 to 3 degrees warmer than Tuesday’s outcome. Most locations Thursday and Friday will range from the mid 30s to near 40. Above freezing conditions can be expected for the weekend and well beyond,
