Forecast

March 10, 2022/report

March 10, 2022

Currently, there is a fast moving trough of low pressure stretching from the Great Lakes region to central California. The active portion of this trough is mainly over the Rockies. Central California is on the far western rim of the trough. This will set off light snow showers over the Sierra Nevada later today and drop our temperatures by 5 to 8 degrees from yesterday’s values. The  balloon sounding over Oakland indicated a freezing level of 8,500 feet which is just marginally lower than the past few days. Gusty winds will move down the west side of the valley today as pressure differences increase between the off shore waters and the desert southwest. The off shore high will move inland Friday and Saturday for a quick turnaround in our temperatures as we move right back into the low to mid 70s. The westerlies will break through late Sunday and Monday, allowing a series of storms to move from west to east into the Pacific Northwest, occasionally spreading showers down into northern California. The first system deserving attention will move inland late Sunday into Monday with showers down to a Bay Area/Tahoe line. Behind this system, disturbances will move inland over a flat zone of upper level  high pressure which will govern central and southern California for much of next week, maintaining a dry forecast.

Forecast: Mostly clear through Sunday. Increasing cloudiness Sunday night. Variable cloudiness at times Monday and Monday night. Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy Tuesday through Thursday.

Two Week Outlook:  March 16 through March 23  Upper level high pressure will build into the western ¼ of the US, resulting in a period of dry weather with temperatures rising to above average.

March:  The 30 day outlook for the month of March really does not show much guidance for either precipitation or temperatures. Essentially what it says is near average temperatures with near average precipitation.

March, April, May: The March, April, May period moves us into the traditional beginning of the dry season. This model is showing below average precipitation for most of the state. Guidance is fairly flat as far as temperatures are concerned as it indicates near average temperatures.

Wind Discussion: Winds will be generally at or less than 12 mph through Sunday with the exception of the west side which will observe winds today through this evening out of the north to northwest at 10 to 20 mph with gusts to 30 mph, mainly along the Interstate 5 corridor.

Rain:  Expect dry conditions over the next 5 to 10 days.

Frost:  Temperatures today will drop anywhere from 4 to 7 degrees from yesterday’s. A cooler air mass is overspreading central California which is associated with a trough of low pressure moving through Nevada and Utah. Gusty winds will move down the west side of the valley as pressure falls over the desert southwest. This will effectively lower dew points, allowing readings tonight to fall into the low to mid 30s. most locations will remain in the 31 to 37 degree range. However, where skies remain clear and winds are near calm, some of the very coldest locations will drop down to 29 to 30 for short durations. Temperatures Saturday morning will be roughly 2 to 3 degrees higher than Friday morning. Beyond that, above freezing conditions will prevail. For now, there’s nothing on paper suggesting a cold weather pattern in the immediate future.
