March 19, 2022

A trough of low pressure is approaching the northern and central California coast. The trough is very elongated from its parent low in the Gulf of Alaska southwards to just off the southern California coast. The strongest dynamics are from northern California northward through the Pacific Northwest with a weaker sector moving through central and southern California. Even so, measurable rain is likely throughout the valley. A few sprinkles are possible this morning then periods of light showers will spread over the valley this afternoon, continuing tonight. Models show some lingering showers in Kern County until the morning commute time Sunday. A strong ridge of high pressure aloft will build in from the west Sunday night and Monday. This will be a very warm week coming up as temperatures begin to move into the 80s beginning Wednesday with mid to upper 80s Thursday through Saturday. A persistent ridge will result in a good week to ten days of dry weather. However, for the third day in a row, models are showing a fairly strong trough moving through about a week from Monday. we’ll have to tweak this as we move forward.

Forecast: Cloudy this morning with sprinkles possible. light showers spreading over the valley this afternoon, continuing tonight. A chance of light showers Sunday morning before roughly 8:00am, mainly in the south valley. Partly cloudy Sunday except remaining mostly cloudy in Kern County and southeastern Tulare County through Monday morning. Mostly clear Monday afternoon through Saturday with a warming trend.

Two Week Outlook:  March 26 through April 1:  Upper level high pressure will build into the western ¼ of the US, resulting in a period of dry weather with temperatures rising to above average.

March:  The 30 day outlook for the month of March really does not show much guidance for either precipitation or temperatures. Essentially what it says is near average temperatures with near average precipitation.

March, April, May: The March, April, May period moves us into the traditional beginning of the dry season. This model is showing below average precipitation for most of the state. Guidance is fairly flat as far as temperatures are concerned as it indicates near average temperatures.

Wind Discussion: Winds this morning will be mainly out of the northwest at 8 to 15 mph, increasing to 15 to 25 mph later this afternoon and tonight with gusts to 35 mph possible, mainly along the west side. Winds Sunday will be out of the northwest at 8 to 15 mph with stronger gusts, diminishing Sunday evening and becoming light after midnight through Monday.

We will be out of the office Sunday, March 20. Reports will resume Monday, March 21. If you have any questions or concerns, please call the number listed above.

Rain:  Doppler radar is showing light showers from Merced County north moving from south/southwest to east/northeast. This trough will be nothing to write home about. Even so, as it moves through during the late afternoon and evening hours, periods of light showers will spread down the valley. Some models show showers lingering through roughly the morning commute Sunday with dry weather thereafter.

Rainfall amounts from Porterville north on the east side will generally range from .12 to .25. From western Merced to Kings County on the east side, expect .07 to 12 with around .10 over the valley portion of Kern County.

For the third day in a row, models show a strong trough of low pressure moving through about a week from Monday. there is definitely a t rend developing so we’ll update you as we go along.

Frost:  Expect above freezing temperatures indefinitely.
