Forecast

April 13, 2022/report

April 13, 2022

Temperatures last night were all over the place. Readings ranged from the upper 20s at Lindcove to the lower 40s in some Kern County locations. A large scale low stretches from the Dakotas westward through the Pacific Northwest to another low center off the Washington coast. The flow aloft is generally out of the west. Currently, the next wave of low pressure will move through northern California late tonight and Thursday for a minor shot at light showers from Merced north and some increase in cloud cover for the south valley. Systems will continue to move on shore roughly every 72 hours. A stronger low will take a path a bit further south and will move through late Friday night and Saturday for a chance of light showers from mainly Fresno County north. The next one following that will arrive around Tuesday of next week. this storm could potentially spread showers all the way down the valley. The fact that the winds aloft are now generally out of the west means temperatures will warm somewhat as the week progresses with near to marginally above average temperatures beginning Thursday and continuing well into next week.

Forecast: Mostly clear this morning. Partly cloudy this afternoon and tonight. Variable cloudiness Thursday with a small chance of light showers as far south as Merced County. Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy Thursday night through Friday. Increasing cloudiness again Friday night leading to a chance of light showers Saturday, mainly from Fresno County north. Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy Saturday night through Monday. increasing cloudiness Monday night with yet another chance of showers Tuesday and Tuesday night. Partly cloudy Wednesday.

Two Week Outlook:  April 20 through April 26: This model is showing a pattern which is more conducive for showers over the northern half of the state with even a chance of showers over southern California.  Temperatures should be marginally below average.

April:  April is a transition month as we move from springtime weather to early summer weather at the end of the month. This model indicates above average temperatures over the southern half of the Golden State with near average temperatures over northern and central California. Precipitation will range below average.

April, May, June: This model shows above average temperatures over the Desert Southwest, stretching westward to California. With high pressure generally in control, expect below average precipitation…which doesn’t mean much now that we’re headed into the dry season.

Wind Discussion: Winds this morning will be light and variable, becoming out of the northwest this afternoon at around 8 to 15 mph. Winds Thursday through Thursday evening will be out of the northwest at 10 to 20 mph with stronger gusts. Winds Friday through Saturday will be generally out of the northwest afternoons and evenings at 8 to 15 mph with stronger gusts. During the night and morning hours, winds will be generally variable to 7 mph.

Rain:  It is extremely doubtful that any measurable rain will occur south of Merced County Thursday as a weak weather system moves through northern California. The risk factor is higher for measurable rain late Friday night and Saturday as this storm wants to take a path a bit further south. With this system, however, rainfall amounts of .10 or less can be expected and mainly north of Kern County. This pattern of storms moving inland through northern California will continue well into next week as we may have another shot at light precipitation next Tuesday and again about late Thursday or Friday.

Frost:  Temperatures were quite varied last night, ranging from the upper 20s to the lower 40s. A few examples are as follows, as of 6:00am: Orosi 30, Ivanhoe 32, Lindcove 28, Exeter 30, Lindsay 29, Porterville 31, and Orange Cove 32.

Models want to bring dew points up as the day progresses. The breezy conditions yesterday lowered dew points yesterday afternoon into the mid to upper 20s. We’ll study dew points as the day wears on with the hope they will struggle back into the 30s. For now, coldest temperatures tonight appear to be in the low to mid 30s. We’re into the time of year now where rapid modification occurs due to the longer days and the much higher sun angle. For now, we’ll just look for low to  mid 30s tonight in the coldest locations. We’ll look over dew points this afternoon to see what adjustments, if any, need to be made.
