Low pressure remains anchored over and off the coast of the Pacific Northwest. The jet stream is flanked under that low, creating a fast west to east flow over northern and central California. Disturbances continue to ride that jet into northern and central California from time to time. The latest of these disturbances is currently moving into northern California. Light showers have spread as far south as Marin County along the coast and Chico inland. Since this system is rapidly moving eastward, precipitation will remain north of the growing area. A flat zone of high pressure will remain over and off the coast of southern California, maintaining near average temperatures through the weekend. The next Pacific low will move inland Saturday. This system is slightly stronger and is tracking eastward at a slightly lower latitude. This will result in a greater chance of showers for the valley Saturday. Like its predecessors, it will be fast moving. Models indicate the southern limit of the rain shield will be all the way down to Kern County. After this system moves through, the storm track will migrate back into the Pacific Northwest and roughly the northern 1/3 of California. For now, it looks like dry weather will reign next week, although there are enough differences on models on a system roughly a week from now to make me think I may have to amend this down the road.
Forecast: Variable cloudiness today and tonight. Partly cloudy Friday. Increasing cloudiness Friday night. a chance of showers Saturday, mainly north of Kern County. Two Week Outlook: April 20 through April 26: This model is showing a pattern which is more conducive for showers over the northern half of the state with even a chance of showers over southern California. Temperatures should be marginally below average.
April: April is a transition month as we move from springtime weather to early summer weather at the end of the month. This model indicates above average temperatures over the southern half of the Golden State with near average temperatures over northern and central California. Precipitation will range below average.
April, May, June: This model shows above average temperatures over the Desert Southwest, stretching westward to California. With high pressure generally in control, expect below average precipitation…which doesn’t mean much now that we’re headed into the dry season.
Wind Discussion: Winds during the night and morning hours will be generally at or less than 7 mph with periods of near calm conditions through Sunday. During the afternoon and early evening hours, winds will be mainly out of th4e northwest at 5 to 15 mph with locally stronger gusts.
Rain: Dry weather will continue through Friday night. A fast moving trough of low pressure will move through Saturday. This system is moving inland at a somewhat lower latitude. It appears to have enough dynamics to spread light showers as far south as Kern County. It’s a fast moving system, so rainfall amounts will be light with no more than .10 in the south valley and perhaps a tenth or two from Fresno County north. Dry weather will quickly return Saturday night with dry weather continuing through at least Wednesday night of next week. a trough of low pressure will move through around Thursday or Friday of next week. currently, it’s unclear whether there will be enough upper air support for showers in the valley.
Frost: All locations will be above freezing tonight and each night for the foreseeable future.
