Temperatures at this hour are running 4 to 6 degrees above yesterday at this time. Warming is even more significant over the higher elevations. Sandberg at an elevation of 4,100 feet is 8 degrees warmer and Blue Canyon at 5,600 feet is up by 7. The balloon sounding at Oakland reported a freezing level of 8,500 feet. Yesterday at this time, the freezing level was right at 5,000 feet. The trough of low pressure responsible for the well below average temperatures has shifted eastward into the Rocky Mountain region. This is allowing a flat zone of upper level high pressure to shift to the east into California. The warming trend will peak Sunday as the center of the high will be virtually overhead, driving temperatures into the low to mid 90s. as is typical for May, the warming trend will not last long. The high will shift eastward Sunday night and Monday and the trough of low pressure will move into the Pacific Northwest and northern California. The marine layer will deepen in response on Monday, allowing modified marine air to move down the valley for our next cooling trend. Any precipitation will remain well north of central California.

Two Week Outlook: May 19 through May 25: This model is indicating a ridge of high pressure will govern the weather during this time frame, resulting in somewhat above average temperatures with generally dry conditions prevailing.
May: This model shows a dominant high stretching from Texas to southern California, resulting in somewhat above average temperatures for the month. It also gives an equal chance of above or below normal precipitation.
May, June, July: This model shows an early season high over the Four Corners region of the desert southwest, stretching westward to California, causing temperatures as we head into summer to be marginally above average. Since this is the dry season, the chances of precipitation will be very low
Wind Discussion: Winds during the afternoons and evenings will be generally out of the northwest at 8 to 15 mph at times through Sunday. Winds during the night and morning hours will be generally at or less than 8 mph with periods of near calm conditions.
