May 23, 2022/report

May 23, 2022

Almost every year, our first triple digit temperatures arrive in mid to late May and this year will be no exception. Temperatures during this short lived heat wave will peak Wednesday when readings will range between 100 and 105 for the first time this year. This morning, readings are only 2 to 7 degrees over yesterday’s levels and will warm into the low to mid 90s this afternoon and the mid to upper 90s Tuesday. Currently, we’re on the eastern edge of strong upper level high pressure off shore. The high is on the move and will be overhead Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday. Typically these heat spikes don’t last very long in May and that will be the case this time, as well. A trough of low pressure will dig southward from the Pacific Northwest and into northern California Wednesday night and Thursday, rapidly deepening the marine layer and allowing it to surge inland for a return to double digits Thursday. The trough will be reinforced over the weekend as a stronger low moves into the Pacific Northwest and northern California. Light showers will spread as far south as the northern ¼ of California Sunday, much too far to the north to affect central California. Temperatures, however, will return to near seasonal values, perhaps even marginally below, the second half of the weekend and into early next week. a flat zone of high pressure will take over a week from Wednesday, continuing the dry weather pattern.

Forecast: Mostly clear and becoming hot Tuesday through Thursday. Mostly clear and cooler Friday through Monday.

Two Week Outlook:  May 30 through June 5: a flat zone of upper level high pressure will be over the eastern Pacific and California, resulting in somewhat above average temperatures with dry weather prevailing.

May:  This model shows a dominant high stretching from Texas to southern California, resulting in somewhat above average temperatures for the month. It also gives an equal chance of above or below normal precipitation.

May, June, July: This model shows an early season high over the Four Corners region of the desert southwest, stretching westward to California, causing temperatures as we head into summer to be marginally above average. Since this is the dry season, the chances of precipitation will be very low

Wind Discussion: winds will be generally out of the northwest afternoons and evenings at 5 to 15 mph with locally stronger gusts. During the night and morning hours, winds will be generally at or less than 8 mph with periods of near calm conditions. By late Wednesday, winds will increase out of the west to northwest at 10 to 20 mph with gusts to near 30 mph along the west side and locally elsewhere.

Rain:  Expect dry conditions for at least the next 7 to 10 days.

Frost:  All locations will be above freezing tonight and each night for the foreseeable future.
