May 31, 2022/report

May 31, 2022

Today is the last day of meteorological spring. The month of May will go down as completely dry for the valley which pretty much caps off yet another dry year. Precipitation is around 60% to 65% of average at most locations. Meteorological summer begins tomorrow and, just as the calendar flips, temperatures will flip right back up to summertime levels as an off shore ridge crushes the marine layer. With a warm bubble of subsiding air above, temperatures will jump into the mid 90s Wednesday and Thursday. This will be short lived, however, as a trough of low pressure west of Washington will sag southward into northern California. This will increase the on shore flow along the coast, allowing modified marine air to move through the Delta and down the valley beginning late Friday, lowering temperatures close to seasonal Saturday through Monday. it appears next week will more or less be governed by a zonal flow with the storm track mainly in the Pacific Northwest, but close enough to keep temperatures fairly moderate.

Forecast: Mostly clear through Thursday with a warming trend. Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy Thursday night through Saturday. Mostly clear Sunday through Tuesday.

Two Week Outlook:  June 7 through  June 13: This model is depicting a rather strong ridge of high pressure over the Desert Southwest and the eastern Pacific Ocean. Temperatures will rise to above average with the usual dry weather continuing.

June:  This model shows a high center over New Mexico and Texas extending into California for marginally above average temperatures for the month with the usual dry  conditions prevailing.

June, July, August: This model is hinting at a possible active monsoon season this year once we get into July and August. It’s possible we could see more than the usual amount of afternoon and evening thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada but the valley will be typically dry with above average temperatures.

Wind Discussion: Winds through Thursday will be out of the northwest afternoons and evenings at around 5 to 12 mph during the afternoons and evenings. Winds during the night and morning hours will be generally less than 8 mph and generally out of the northwest. Winds Thursday night and Friday will be out of the northwest at 10 to 20 mph at times with stronger gusts along the west side.

Rain:  Expect dry conditions for at least the next 7 to 10 days.

Frost:  All locations will be above freezing tonight and each night for the foreseeable future.
