June 11, 2022

Picture a dome of hot air piled over the valley floor. Picture it also descending downward toward the earth, heating by compression and resulting in a heat wave. Most locations yesterday soared to between 100 and 105 with similar conditions expected today. Already, however, there are signs of a cooling trend on the horizon. Yesterday, the difference in pressure between San Francisco and Las Vegas was roughly the same. This morning, the altimeter reading at San Francisco was 29.94 while Las Vegas was reporting 29.77 inches of mercury. This is now turning the winds at the surface on shore and will soon be penetrating the Delta. This is due to a trough of low pressure advancing towards the Pacific Northwest. Gusty winds will blow down valley with gusty northwesterly winds on Sunday as marine air lowers temperatures down into the 90s. Refreshing upper 80s can be expected Monday. just as fast as the cool down ends, another couple of days of hot weather will return Thursday and Friday of next week due to yet another high moving in from the eastern Pacific. The process will begin anew next weekend as a stronger low moves into the Pacific Northwest and northern California.

Forecast: Mostly clear and hot today. Mostly clear and less hot Sunday and cooler yet Monday. mostly clear Tuesday through Friday with a warming trend. Mostly clear and cooler again Saturday.

Two Week Outlook:  June 18 through June 24: This model shows a trough of low pressure being more dominant along the west coast, allowing modified marine air to move down the valley from time to time. Near to marginally below average temperatures will be the result along with dry conditions.

June:  This model shows a high center over New Mexico and Texas extending into California for marginally above average temperatures for the month with the usual dry conditions prevailing.

June, July, August: This model is hinting at a possible active monsoon season this year once we get into July and August. It’s possible we could see more than the usual amount of afternoon and evening thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada but the valley will be typically dry with above average temperatures.

Wind Discussion: Winds today will be mainly out of the northwest at 5 to 12 mph. Winds later tonight and at times through Monday will be mainly out of the northwest at 10 to 12 mph. Local gusts to 35 mph are possible along the Interstate 5 corridor. Winds Tuesday will decrease to around 5 to 12 mph with stronger gusts.

Rain:  Expect dry conditions for at least the next 7 to 10 days.

Frost:  All locations will be above freezing tonight and each night for the foreseeable future.
