Forecast

June 15, 2022/report

June 15, 2022

A weak ridge of upper level high pressure is currently moving on shore. Noticeably warmer weather will be apparent through Thursday as readings move into the mid to upper 90s. winds through Travis AFB in the Delta and through Pacheco Pass are light at this hour, indicating no marine air will affect the valley over the next 48 hours. However, a major cooling trend is on the horizon. A rather robust low pressure system is developing off the coast of Vancouver Island and will dig a trough southward to off the northern California coast Thursday. As a result, the marine layer will rapidly deepen and will surge inland Thursday night and Friday. High resolution models are indicating highs will only top out in the low to mid 80s Friday through Monday as the trough of low pressure moves very slowly inland over the weekend. Temperatures will begin to rebound by Tuesday as upper level high pressure over the Four Corners region begins to expand westward towards southern and central California. For now, it appears the high will remain too far to the east to move monsoonal moisture into California as a dry southwesterly flow will be in place Tuesday through Friday of next week. temperatures, however, should jump back into the mid 90s to the lower 100s.

Forecast: Mostly clear through Friday. Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy Friday night through Monday and much cooler. Mostly clear Tuesday through Thursday with a warming trend.

Two Week Outlook:  June 21 through June 27: This model is more of an early summer type pattern with upper level high pressure residing over the Desert Southwest. This could be the first inkling of the monsoon season with above average temperatures and even a chance of isolated thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada.

June:  This model shows a high center over New Mexico and Texas extending into California for marginally above average temperatures for the month with the usual dry conditions prevailing.

June, July, August: This model is hinting at a possible active monsoon season this year once we get into July and August. It’s possible we could see more than the usual amount of afternoon and evening thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada but the valley will be typically dry with above average temperatures.

Wind Discussion: Winds through Thursday will be mainly out of the northwest afternoons and evenings at 5 to 12 mph. During the night and morning hours, winds will be generally out of the northwest at generally less than 8 mph with periods of near calm conditions. Winds late Thursday and at times through Monday will be out of the northwest at 10 to 20 mph. Gusts to near 30 mph will be possible, mainly along the west side.

Rain:  Expect dry conditions for at least the next 7 to 10 days.

Frost:  All locations will be above freezing tonight and each night for the foreseeable future.
