Strong upper level high pressure is centered over southern Nevada this morning. At the surface, pressure is higher over the interior west than off shore. The current altimeter reading at Salt Lake City was 30.21 inches of mercury while at the same time, the reading at San Francisco was 30.05. even though the pressure difference is pretty minor, it is enough to keep the marine layer very shallow. In fact, the sounding above Monterey this morning indicated the marine layer was only 1,100 feet deep, which has been pretty steady the past few days. The bottom line to all this means very hot weather. Highs today will generally range between 103 and 108. Minor cooling will occur Tuesday and Wednesday as the high slowly weakens. Even so, it appears triple digits will occur through Thursday. Finally, beginning Friday, a low pressure system off the Pacific Northwest will begin to push inland, lowering temperatures into double digits over the weekend. The winds aloft will remain out of the southwest, ensuring the monsoon over the Desert Southwest remains over that region through the period. If it’s any consolation, models for next week indicate near to marginally below average temperatures.
Forecast: Mostly clear and hot through Thursday. Mostly clear Thursday night through Monday and less hot.

Two Week Outlook: June 30 through July 6 This model is indicating a trough of low pressure will be more dominant over the eastern Pacific and the western US. A west to southwest flow aloft will be dominant, maintaining dry weather with below average temperatures.
June: This model shows a high center over New Mexico and Texas extending into California for marginally above average temperatures for the month with the usual dry conditions prevailing.
June, July, August: This model is hinting at a possible active monsoon season this year once we get into July and August. It’s possible we could see more than the usual amount of afternoon and evening thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada but the valley will be typically dry with above average temperatures.
Wind Discussion: Winds during the afternoons and evenings will be mainly out of the northwest at 5 to 12 mph through Thursday. Winds during the night and morning hours will be variable to no more than 10 mph.
Rain: Expect dry conditions for the next 7 to 10 days.
Frost: All locations will be above freezing tonight and each night for the foreseeable future.
