July 6, 2022/report

July 6, 2022

A large upper high centered over Arkansas this morning governs the weather from the southeast US westward into the Desert Southwest while low pressure resides off the coast of the Pacific Northwest. We are close enough to the low for occasional bursts of shallow marine air to move into the valley, maintaining temperatures marginally below average. That will begin to change Friday as that high spins westward into California. This will effectively shut off the marine machine with hot temperatures to follow. Readings will rise to near average Friday and above average beginning Saturday. Readings will move into triple digits possibly as early as Sunday. If not, for sure Monday through Thursday of next week when hottest locations will rise into the 105 to 107 degree range. The flow aloft, which is currently out of the southwest, will briefly turn southerly Sunday through Tuesday.  This could result in isolated afternoon and evening thunderstorms over the high Sierra with occasional high clouds over the valley floor. Late next week, the high will again migrate further east, allowing marine air to move down the valley to begin a slow cooling trend. Hurricane Bonnie, located roughly 700 miles south of Cabo San Lucas, will move west/northwest but will have no impact on California.

Forecast: Mostly clear skies through Friday. Mostly clear Friday night through Wednesday with a warming trend.

Two Week Outlook:  July 12 through July 18  A broad expanse of high pressure centered over the Desert Southwest will move back overhead during this period for above average temperatures. Monsoon moisture may trigger afternoon and evening thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada with occasional clouds over the valley floor.

June:  This model shows a high center over New Mexico and Texas extending into California for marginally above average temperatures for the month with the usual dry conditions prevailing.

June, July, August: This model is hinting at a possible active monsoon season this year once we get into July and August. It’s possible we could see more than the usual amount of afternoon and evening thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada but the valley will be typically dry with above average temperatures.

Wind Discussion: Winds will be mainly out of the northwest afternoons and evenings at around 8 to 15 mph. Local gusts to near 25 mph can be expected, mainly along the west side. Winds will decrease Friday to around 5 to 12 mph with stronger afternoon gusts, continuing Saturday.

Rain:  Expect dry conditions for the next 7 to 10 days.

Frost:  All locations will be above freezing tonight and each night for the foreseeable future.
