On this day in 1905, it was 114 in Bakersfield and 115 in Fresno, the hottest day on record for Fresno. The upper 90s which we will experience the next few days will feel like an arctic blast in comparison. Low pressure is oriented from northeast to southwest from British Columbia to off the northern California coast. The main center of strong upper level high pressure is over Texas and Oklahoma with its western edge in southern California. Blended model information this morning indicates the high will slowly retrograde towards the west coast with its center ending up over Arizona and Utah by Tuesday. In the short term, double digit temperatures will continue through Sunday with most locations huddled into the upper 90s. As the high strengthens early next week, temperatures will respond accordingly with widespread triple digits beginning Tuesday and possibly a few 100 degree readings as early as Monday. the latest sounding above Monterey indicates the marine layer is only 1,000 feet deep. Some of the shallow sea breeze is leaking through the Delta, however the difference in pressure between the coast and the interior is not enough to tug it into the central and south valley. The winds aloft by Tuesday will become southerly to possibly even southeasterly, drawing a minimal amount of monsoon moisture up the Sierra Nevada for a chance of isolated thunderstorms over the high country during the afternoons and evenings. Occasional clouds can be expected from Tuesday through Thursday of next week over the valley floor. Again, triple digit heat will be a way of life from Tuesday through possibly the following weekend.

Two Week Outlook: July 14 through July 20 This model continues to indicate upper level high pressure will be over much of the western states with an active monsoon in the Desert Southwest. It’s possible some of this moisture may leak into southern and central California for a chance of isolated thunderstorms over the high Sierra and occasional cloud cover over the valley floor. Temperatures will remain somewhat above average with the usual dry conditions prevailing.
June: This model shows a high center over New Mexico and Texas extending into California for marginally above average temperatures for the month with the usual dry conditions prevailing.
June, July, August: This model is hinting at a possible active monsoon season this year once we get into July and August. It’s possible we could see more than the usual amount of afternoon and evening thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada but the valley will be typically dry with above average temperatures.
Wind Discussion: During the afternoon and evening hours, winds will be mainly out of the northwest at 8 to 15 mph with locally stronger gusts. During the late evening through the morning hours, winds will be variable to 10 mph with periods of near calm conditions through Monday.
Rain: Expect dry conditions for the next 7 to 10 days.
Frost: All locations will be above freezing tonight and each night for the foreseeable future.
