July 12, 2022

Central California continues to be on a balancing act between strong upper level high pressure centered over the Four Corners region and a trough of low pressure off the coast of the Pacific Northwest. Currently, the high is winning out, resulting in widespread triple digit temperatures. The freezing level has risen to 17,400 feet. Mountain locations continue to reflect the warm air at higher locations as well. As of 4:00am, the temperature at Sandberg at 4,100 feet was 67 degrees while at Blue Canyon at 5,600 feet a reading of 68 degrees was recorded. The marine layer has actually deepened a tad with a depth of 1,800 feet at Monterey. There will be some cooling in the Delta region, but at this time there’s not enough difference in pressure between the coast and the interior to tug that sea breeze down the valley. Models do show the high shifting a bit further east Wednesday only to see the high jog further west again Friday and over the weekend. The flow aloft, which is currently out of the southwest will be out of the southeast Friday and over the weekend, possibly moving enough monsoon moisture up the Sierra Nevada for a chance of isolated thunderstorms over the summit. The GFS model shows a tropical storm moving up the coast of Baja next week with a chance of showers and thunderstorms over southern California. However, that’s the odd model out so we’ll maintain a forecast of the usual hot, dry conditions for the valley.

Forecast: Mostly clear and hot through Saturday. Mostly clear and continued hot Saturday night through Tuesday.

Two Week Outlook:  July 19 through July 25  This model shows upper level  high pressure shifting a bit further  east, allowing temperatures to move to somewhat near seasonal levels. Typical dry conditions will continue.

June:  This model shows a high center over New Mexico and Texas extending into California for marginally above average temperatures for the month with the usual dry conditions prevailing.

June, July, August: This model is hinting at a possible active monsoon season this year once we get into July and August. It’s possible we could see more than the usual amount of afternoon and evening thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada but the valley will be typically dry with above average temperatures.

Wind Discussion: During the afternoon and evening hours, winds will be mainly out of the northwest at 8 to 15 mph with locally stronger gusts. During the late evening through the morning hours, winds will be variable to 10 mph with periods of near calm conditions through Friday.

Rain:  Expect dry conditions for the next 7 to 10 days.

Frost:  All locations will be above freezing tonight and each night for the foreseeable future.
