July 14, 2022/report

July 14, 2022

Today will see the beginning of a prolonged heat wave which should last for a week or so. Yesterday, minor cooling occurred due to a shallow layer of marine air moving down the valley. Yesterday at this time the marine layer’s depth was 2,500 feet. This morning, it has shrunk back to 1,500 feet. Currently, winds at Travis AFB in the Delta are light and variable, indicating the marine machine has been shut down. Today, we move back into triple digits. High resolution models indicate temperatures in the 105 to 109 degree range beginning Friday and lasting through Monday with triple digit heat continuing all the way through Thursday of next week. a classic summer configuration is showing up on models. There is a strong high parked over the Four Corners region.   The high covers everything from Arkansas and Missouri to the east to California on the west. The high is taking somewhat of a westward jog, turning the winds aloft out of the southeast. Satellite imagery shows a very active monsoon over the Desert Southwest. Debris clouds from thunderstorms over northern Mexico yesterday have moved as far north as Inyo County. Some of this moisture will begin to work up the Sierra Nevada for an increasing chance of afternoon and evening thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada. Some higher level clouds will also begin to show up over the San Joaquin Valley. Models do show minor cooling beginning about Thursday of next week as the high edges a bit further to the east. Until then, expect daily triple digits.

Forecast: Mostly clear and hot today. Mostly clear and hot tonight through Sunday with occasional high clouds. Occasional high clouds, otherwise mostly clear and hot Sunday night through Thursday.

Two Week Outlook:  July 21 through July 27  This model shows high pressure moving a bit farther to the west, resulting in marginally above average temperatures. There will be a chance of  isolated thunderstorms over the high Sierra with the usual dry conditions over the valley floor.

June:  This model shows a high center over New Mexico and Texas extending into California for marginally above average temperatures for the month with the usual dry conditions prevailing.

June, July, August: This model is hinting at a possible active monsoon season this year once we get into July and August. It’s possible we could see more than the usual amount of afternoon and evening thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada but the valley will be typically dry with above average temperatures.

Wind Discussion: During the afternoon and evening hours, winds will be mainly out of the northwest at 8 to 15 mph with locally stronger gusts. During the late evening through the morning hours, winds will be variable to 10 mph with periods of near calm conditions through Sunday.

Rain:  Expect dry conditions for the next 7 to 10 days.

Frost:  All locations will be above freezing tonight and each night for the foreseeable future.
