July 15, 2022/report

July 15, 2022

If you think it’s hot this morning, try this one on for size. Death Valley at 5:00am was reporting a temperature of 104. The valley can’t be compared to Death Valley, but nevertheless will be hot. A massive ridge of upper level high pressure stretches from the southeastern US westward to California with its main center over the Four Corners region. The high will shift further west over the next 72 hours, generating a classic valley heat wave which models project will last at least a week. Sandberg at an elevation of 4,100 feet is reporting 76 at this hour. The freezing level is now up to 17,000 feet over Oakland this morning. The marine layer is 1,800 feet at Monterey. However, the surface flow pattern is actually off shore so no marine influence is expected for the next several days. Moisture from the monsoon has worked as far west as eastern San Bernardino and Riverside Counties. As the high jogs further west, so will the monsoon, giving the high Sierra a chance at afternoon and evening isolated thunderstorms. Temperatures on the valley floor beginning tomorrow will mainly range from 104 to 108 with similar conditions through Wednesday of next week. the next chance for a cooling trend will be next weekend as the high is suppressed further east due to a developing trough over the Pacific Northwest which models indicate will sag southward into California, allowing marine air to finally surge into the valley. this will result in double digit temperatures after next Friday.

Forecast: Mostly clear and hot through Monday. mostly clear with occasional high clouds and continued hot Tuesday through Friday.

Two Week Outlook:  July 21 through July 27  This model shows high pressure moving a bit farther to the west, resulting in marginally above average temperatures. There will be a chance of  isolated thunderstorms over the high Sierra with the usual dry conditions over the valley floor.

June:  This model shows a high center over New Mexico and Texas extending into California for marginally above average temperatures for the month with the usual dry conditions prevailing.

June, July, August: This model is hinting at a possible active monsoon season this year once we get into July and August. It’s possible we could see more than the usual amount of afternoon and evening thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada but the valley will be typically dry with above average temperatures.

Wind Discussion: During the afternoon and evening hours, winds will be mainly out of the northwest at 8 to 15 mph with locally stronger gusts. During the late evening through the morning hours, winds will be variable to 10 mph with periods of near calm conditions through Monday.

Rain:  Expect dry conditions for the next 7 to 10 days.

Frost:  All locations will be above freezing tonight and each night for the foreseeable future.
