July 16, 2022/report

July 16, 2022

The air mass above the valley floor is extremely warm this morning. Sandberg at 4,100 feet is reporting 80 degrees at 5:00am. Blue Canyon up at 5,600 feet was reporting 72  degrees while way up at Bear Peak at 8,200 feet the temperature is a balmy 68 degrees. The latest balloon sounding above Oakland this morning pegged the freezing level at 16,700 feet. All of this are symptoms of warm subsiding air under a bubble of high pressure centered over the Four Corners region. This will allow temperatures on the valley floor over the next several days to soar to between 104 and 110 degrees. This next week will be a hot one through Thursday with widespread triple digits, however temperatures will slowly begin to lower beginning Wednesday as the high over California begins to weaken and shift further east. To our south, we have a new tropical storm well south of Cabo San Lucas. Tropical storm Estele will move northwestward along the peninsula as it reaches hurricane strength. It will then take a northwesterly jog, weakening late next week. this storm will not affect California. There is a limited amount of monsoon moisture working its way up the Sierra Nevada for a chance of isolated thunderstorms afternoons and evenings up there.

Forecast: Mostly clear and hot through Tuesday. Mostly clear with a slow cooling trend Wednesday through Saturday.

Two Week Outlook:  July 23 through July 29  This model continues to show well above average temperatures during this period. It also shows a better than even chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms over the southern California deserts and possibly up the Sierra Nevada. The usual dry conditions will continue over the valley floor.

June:  This model shows a high center over New Mexico and Texas extending into California for marginally above average temperatures for the month with the usual dry conditions prevailing.

June, July, August: This model is hinting at a possible active monsoon season this year once we get into July and August. It’s possible we could see more than the usual amount of afternoon and evening thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada but the valley will be typically dry with above average temperatures.

Wind Discussion: During the afternoon and evening hours, winds will be mainly out of the northwest at 8 to 15 mph with locally stronger gusts. During the late evening through the morning hours, winds will be variable to 10 mph with periods of near calm conditions through Tuesday.

Rain:  Expect dry conditions for the next 7 to 10 days.

Frost:  All locations will be above freezing tonight and each night for the foreseeable future.
